I spent the week feeling like my usual gremlin self and she made me look spectacular in this combo of film and digital. Special shout out to the lighting in my flat and my korean skincare routine.

I’ve worked running small businesses and charities for an absolute age so I’ve done a lot and I’ve seen a lot, both good and bad. There are some instances when you should pick a lane but a lot of the time CEOs and charity directors in small organisations have to be able to do it all.

Here are some pictures to show you just what I mean.
1. This is just me so you know who I am.
2. I’ve run numerous projects and obtained the funding for them up to £250k.
3. Business, fundraising, marketing strategies are useful at all levels and help you get funding. They don’t, however, need to be overcomplicated, just clear and achievable.
4. What backs up these strategies? Data, systems, and research. While at the LI I worked on the Skills for Greener Places with the policy team to understand what the current landscape of the green skills sector is and see what’s missing. (Yes I will get nerdy about database structures, sic/soc codes, and beautiful data visualisations.
5. And how do we get people invested in the changes we want to make? We write articles and put on events.
6. Can those events also do some hard work like divert clothes waste from landfill? Yes, yes they can.
7. Should you try and do all this with some sense of responsibility and kindness - of, bloody course you should (and no you won't always get it right but you've got a try and learn right?)
8. This is just a nice picture of Japan as a reward for getting this far.

Portrait on a train
Something a lil different for y'all. I don't normally paint pictures of people and for good reason. It can feel a bit vulnerable both because it's a picture of myself and also I'm not very good at it. But hey, that's why we practice.
This is from a train journey to visit the amazing Cat at @bobcatgallery to deliver a painting and do some painting. Travelling from Vauxhall to Putney. One reflection, one view.
Much of my life has been travelling on trains up and down the country with art and books, off to visit family, friends, go to uni.

Having a little clear out on cyanotypes, including this cotton noren.
I have edited the sound because every time I tried to record some ambience the child in the building next door started screaming and hitting things or a plane went over. I suppose that is ambience in London. Just going to play Drowning Pool in the flat to drown out the loud noises.
Jokes aside, I love to lie on the sofa, with the door open, reading a book or watching the swifts fly around outside over the city. It’s one of my favourite spots and one of the few times I’ve really felt a home is mine after years of moving (24 times and five cities in case you were wondering).
I know no one ever reads these but it’s nice to put a lil old reflective snippet, instagram is essentially my visual diary.

Having fun isn't hard when you've got a library card
With the changes to the Barbican over the next couple of years, they’ve already started moving some bits around. So when I can’t get a seat at the big table, I opt for the comfy chairs that get just the right amount of sun. There’s sometimes one isolated chair near the end by the Art History section (which seems fitting) and I settle in for the afternoon. The sun warming my head and the quiet rustling of people nearby reading the papers keeping me grounded. If the windows are open you can hear the gentle nattering of the people outside and the fountains in the background.
I’ve opted for a lighter feel on this one as the light spring air felt like a fitting and refreshing take.
Have I made the books too colourful? Who can truly say? Not me mate, I just painted the thing.

Libraries I paintings I barbican
Last week I was fortunate enough to go to the new V&A East Museum before it opened, and talk to the kind and accommodating Sheila O'Donnell and John Tuomey @odonnell_tuomey , the architects, and Jen McLachlan, the project director.
Of course thanks to @stir_world for the commission, especially @anmolahuja94 and @samtanadeem , and support of the day from @satvikumar_ .
It's always fun going back to this ever-changing site. Back when I was fresh out of uni I was working in a field in Sheffield on the meadow mix trials for some of the planting thay would later go into the park. Seeing the constant changes is quite something and I genuinely love this new museum. It felt like how a local museum would feel like with the right support and funding. Everything from the shadow gaps to the seating was spot on.
Special thanks to Anmol for keeping the proof of pudding line in the edit. We all love a baking reference and this building is a crusty loaf. 🍞

Awww yeah, it's another painting of a train. I know what the people want. 🚇🚃🚋
This time a circle line underground train stopped at Edgware Road looking out the window at the trunking.
An odd choice you might think, but when I lived in Maida Vale I'd often get the train from here and be comforted by the organised but not too neat lines of the trunking.

Alsobthe foreshortening on this looks different to other ones because my ref pics were from a different angle. Also the moquette on this was way harder than the other one somehow.

Many people know I like to go to the Barbican to work, I freelance when not painting and I'm not quite at the point of being able to rent a desk somewhere let alone a studio for my art. I wander around the city working in odd little spots. Sometimes the Barbican, the NT or the BFI, other times pubs and cafes when it's quieter and I'm not displacing more flush customers.
They move the seats around in this area from time to time, there aren’t always sofas in this spot but on this day there were and it was the only place I could find to work. The residents of the sofa shifted through the day, a woman soaking up the ray of sun whilst studying, a group of conference goers sharing lunch and talking about their talks, a older woman waiting for her husband before heading to a matinee show.
I like my own company but it can get lonely at home, and sitting in the Barbican helps me feel part of something when so often I’m not. The light in this spot always powers me up, the big orange square sign it’s own weird brutalist sun.

Behind the scenes
Painting can be a process where you forget to move for hours and keep on painting. Other times it's more like this where you're constantly distracted or more often than not, staring at your work from every angle, thinking about the next move.
Outtakes include stepping in my paint water pot and falling off the sofa because I thought my housemate was about to walk in the room.
