Old Kent Road is a short documentary film by Joe Wilson. Captured over many days spent walking up and down the South-East London road, it stands as a unique record of the people who call the major urban thoroughfare home. Using a simple one person setup to maintain the most intimate and immediate approach possible, Joe engaged in fleeting conversations with locals in the hope they might reveal something to a stranger they hadn’t before; allowing equal space for the mundane, bizarre and profound.
During the interviews, filmed across 2017 and 2018, Joe found a wider story about the area and its inhabitants. Typical subjects emerged: men who, while not necessarily homeless, spend a lot of time outside, having formed idiosyncratic lifestyles and perspectives in relation to the world at large.
