Rediscover the forgotten story. 🌜🎧🌛 Listen to Forgotten Fantasy: The Luna Luna Podcast, hosted by art historian Helen Molesworth. When Luna Luna opened in Germany in 1987, it was greeted with rain. Lots and lots of rain. Guests entered the grounds and came upon wild sights and sounds, including a symphony of farts, stilt-walkers, and a satirical take on the Nazis. The amusement park was deemed a success and the press said it was headed for a world tour. But when plans fell apart, André turned his passions elsewhere. Kenny Scharf shapes Luna Luna. After weeks of painting in a Vienna warehouse, Kenny Scharf’s customized Victorian-style chair swing ride for the 1987 park was complete with vibrant, spray-painted panels, and the artist’s signature oversized, grinning cartoon heads.  The swing ride sent passengers soaring through the air where they caught a glimpse of the park and Scharf’s surreal figures, who beckoned visitors with their energy and playfulness. Luna Luna remembers Georg Baselitz, a key figure in Neo-Expressionism known for his inverted paintings that challenge traditional representation. A groundbreaking painter who defied convention, Georg Baselitz brought his signature expressive distortions to Luna Luna in 1987.  He designed flags, posters, and paintings of inverted hands and various animals in primary colors for a pavilion in which visitors’ shadows magically linger on the walls for twenty seconds before gradually vanishing. Baselitz’s poster for Luna Luna features two hands rendered in inverse color schemes reaching out against a starry backdrop. All archival photos © Sabina Sarnitz. Courtesy Luna Luna, LLC.

What happens when the world’s greatest artists come together to create the world’s first art amusement park?🌜🎧🌛 Listen to Forgotten Fantasy: The Luna Luna Podcast, hosted by art historian Helen Molesworth. André Heller came to New York City to curate a unique collaboration of old world Europe and the new wave American scene. He sought one artist in particular, Basquiat, and offered him the one of the grandest attraction at Luna Luna, the Ferris wheel. But André, the fabulist, may have overpromised the lengths Luna Luna could go. Binge the entire series now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Link in bio. Arik Brauer’s storybook carousel. Carefully sculpted and brightly painted, Arik Brauer’s fairytale Carousel grew from miniature models into child-sized creatures for guests to ride on. Set to a song written, produced and performed by the artist’s daughter Timna Brauer, the carousel invites visitors into a magical world rendered in vivid color, inspired by insects, and populated by surreal creatures, including a mermaid, a hand-horse, a she-wolf, and a half moon. Unearthing a lost chapter of history.🌜🎧🌛 Listen to Forgotten Fantasy: The Luna Luna Podcast, hosted by art historian Helen Molesworth. André grew up in dreary post-war Vienna, but was always searching for joy and exuberance. He became Austria’s first pop radio DJ and then a celebrated pop singer, peace activist, and artist. Meanwhile in New York, the stuffy white art world was starting to open its doors to something new – the intersection of graffiti, hip hop, and one young genius in particular, Jean-Michel Basquiat. The two would soon become unlikely collaborators. Binge the entire series now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts. Link in bio.
