“Sparks” A little backstory… During the pandemic I was surfing a spot regularly where i met a young kid named Jesse who was surfing with bucketloads of joy… Racing up and down the point wave after wave despite his water-logged, beat up, 90’s mini mal thruster (with missing middle fin). We got chatting and Jesse filled me in on how he finds his boards in council clean up and fixes them up. Considering the huge amount of new boards being made at the time it got me thinking about the disposable nature of boards and in general many things we consume and how we can be so frivolous to throw away something that may have plenty of life left in it.
Originally the underwater dream sequences were something I planned on shooting myself but after speaking with Jono Heighes who manages the archival footage for Ron & Valerie Taylor, I decided to reuse some of the incredible underwater footage from their series Inner Space (1973) and Surf Scene (1965) which like the beat up old surfboard still has so much to give and provides a glimpse at what our oceans used to be like (whale sharks off seal rocks). As a kid I often watched docos and surf films like these that helped spark my curiosity to escape into the natural world and I hope this film might do the same whilst prompting audiences consider the objects in their lives that use materials or processes that are contributing to the destruction of the same natural world they enjoy.

“Sparks” is a film that follows Jesse a young northern NSW boy through his day to day life and aquatic escapes.
Inspired by my time living on the NSW north coast.
Jazzed to receive a highly commended at the @monsterchildren short film awards.
