13,000ft above sea level on top of Mauna Kea on the island of Kona in Hawaii last year. The tree here is the Māmane and is found only in Hawaii, usually growing at very high altitudes like on top of this volcano. It is also home to a very cute yellow bird called the honeycreeper.
It was so windy and cold taking this photo, I remember @graceshinejeon and I had come on a whim straight from the beach with no warm clothing, just covering ourselves with beach towels to stay warm. It was also our first experience with a bit of altitude sickness as we drove up the 13,000ft in maybe an hour or so. After the sun went down we pulled over in our little convertible VW bug to lay back and watch the stars come out on top of Mauna Kea.
My favorite thing about this photo is the clouds in the background. Being completely above them gave such a surreal feeling in the moment.
