Jackson Dean filled the BMI lobby Tuesday (May 5) to celebrate his second ever chart-topper “Heavens To Betsy.”
Emceed by BMI’s MaryAnn Keen, the event honored the artists, songwriters, publishers and industry team members who contributed to the single’s success.
Written by Dean, Benjy Davis and Driver Williams, and produced by Luke Dick, the track appeared on Dean’s sophomore album On The Back Of My Dreams. It marked the first No. 1 for Williams, who was presented with a custom Taylor 210e DLX guitar to commemorate the moment.

Proud to be a part of the amazing new record, Dandelion. @ellalangleymusic is an artist for a generation. She lives and breathes music and art and is truly a lightning rod for creativity - I don’t know if she’s ever actually been in a cocoon, but she has truly grown beautiful wings. Grateful to be alive to see it and happy to be a flower along the way. Thanks to the other flowers who’ve shared the field with me <aka the writing room>: @mirandalambert@joybethtaylor@aaronraitiere - truly a divine gift to get to create with you all. Thanks @iambenwest for such awesome creativity in the sonic shaping along with the musician friends - proud of you guys: @akselcoedrums@ster_loid@spencercullumjr@therealtombukovac@charlieworsham and other friends I’m missing. Also thanks to my publishing team @littlelouder_music for supporting my creative habits - both good and bad.
BMI’s lobby was standing-room only on Tuesday afternoon (March 17) as industry members gathered to celebrate Ella Langley and her chart-toppers “Weren’t For The Wind” and the record-breaking “Choosin’ Texas.”
BMI’s Clay Bradley kicked off by highlighting Langley. “We have been brought here by a maverick, a trendsetter, someone who broke the mold by refusing to go without permission,” said Bradley. “Her success is proof that when you take action and write your own story, the world starts to listen.”

Me and some friends got to ring the bell - #1 at country radio. Thanks @ellalangleymusic and fellow cowriters @joybethtaylor@mirandalambert . The ecosystem of talent and work is never lost on me. Thanks @littlelouder_music for all the pub support. Thanks to Ella’s teams for getting it out there on its unbelievable rocket ship. Thanks Ben West, ML, and EL and all the musicians who crushed this track hard. Unforgettable getting to make coffee for and write with these amazing women.
I’ve been thinking about this tragedy since hearing about Brett James. The songwriting community is small enough that a loss like this feels like losing someone from high school—close or not, it’s personal.
Many knew Brett far better than I did, but one of the great things about this community is how much you can dig in with someone in just a day. About a year ago, Brett came over with Lydia Vaughn, and we just wanted to have fun. I was in a strange creative space, which happens when you do this every day, but Brett gave us permission to lean into play—chasing a simple idea in the spirit of Van Morrison. By the end, we were smiling at what we made, and it felt light, special, alive.
I remember moving back to town and going to Brett and Dierks’ #1 party for I Hold On. That song was so right, so true—it made me feel energized to be back in a community that shows up every day with the hope of being inspired.
Life is wild and beautiful and tragic. This loss makes me even more grateful for the gift of our creative community. My heart goes out to Brett’s family and friends. I’m glad to carry this little soul imprint of time with him. Everyone should be so lucky to connect. Thank you, Brett.
