A New York City–based tap dancer, choreographer, and performer, Luke Hickey is part of a new generation shaping the field today. Named one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch”, his work moves fluidly between concert dance, jazz spaces, and contemporary performance.
As a longtime member of Dorrance Dance, he has performed at major venues including The Kennedy Center, The Guggenheim, and New York City Center, as well as festivals across the U.S. and Europe.
His choreographic work has been presented at Jacob’s Pillow, 92NY, and Birdland Jazz Club, among others; and his teaching continues to reach tap communities worldwide.

Luke Hickey is a tap dancer, choreographer, and teacher from Chapel
Hill, NC. Named by Dance Magazine among their “25 To Watch” in 2020,
Hickey began his lifelong study with the legendary tap educator and
founder of the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble, Gene Medler, at the
age of seven. For over 20 years, Hickey has had the opportunity to
perform on stages all over the world including LA’s Ford Amphitheater,
Beijing International Dance Festival, the Guggenheim Museum, Detroit
Jazz Festival and the Kennedy Center. As a choreographer, he has
presented live music and dance concerts at venues including Birdland
Jazz Club, Chelsea Factory, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, 92NY,
Little Island, and American Dance Festival. He has been a member of
MacArthur Fellow, Michelle Dorrance’s, award-winning company, Dorrance
Dance, since 2019. Recently, Hickey and longtime collaborator
Elizabeth Burke created their new work titled, “A Swing Suite,” which
is currently touring. Hickey is privileged to teach tap dance all over
the world at dance studios, universities and tap dance festivals
including the North Carolina Rhythm Tap Festival, the Chicago Human

Luke Hickey is a NYC-based tap dancer, choreographer, film director, and actor, described as “never unmusical” by The New York Times and named among Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch” in 2020. A proud protégé of JUBA Award recipient Gene Medler, founder of the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble, Hickey credits his knowledge and achievements to Medler’s incomparable brilliance and mentorship.
Hickey’s choreographic work has been presented at renowned venues including Jacob’s Pillow, Birdland Jazz Club, the Joyce Theater season at Chelsea Factory, 92NY, Little Island, and the American Dance Festival. He has performed at iconic stages such as Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room, The Kennedy Center, The Guggenheim Museum’s Rotunda, Oslo Jazz Festival, The Joyce Theater, The Ravello Music Festival, MGM National Harbor, The Faison Firehouse Theater, Detroit Jazz Festival, The New Victory Theater, and New York City Center.
Since 2019, Hickey has been a company member of MacArthur Fellow Michelle Dorrance’s award-winning Dorrance Dance.
