Last week I illustrated an article for The New York Times Opinion Section @nytimes @nytopinion ! The article is up now. /2024/11/11/opinion/egypt-prison-democracy.html The text by Ahmed Naji tells the story about two friends who were imprisoned due to their political beliefs under the totalitarian Egyptian regime of Mubarak and Sisi. He talks about the beauty and depth of a friendship that started under uncertain terms. Thank you to AD Kristie Bailey for the thoughtful art direction and trust. 𝓅𝒶𝑔𝑒 𝒹𝑒𝓉𝒶𝒾𝓁𝓈 Für Luise, für Marie Marie Walser @la_marie_walser 🌀 Luise Schaller @luiseschaller 💙 This book is an encounter between drawing and typography. Conceived through friendship and a state of interest and curiosity in each other and each others practice, we began sharing diary excerpts, texts (both theoretical and poetic, both selfwritten and quoted), notes, thoughts. Providing an intimate insight into the others experiences and interests, it revealed coincidental similarities but also differences in our way of thinking, noting, working. The fragmented textual portrait by the other was the material we began to work with in our own way. A steady exchange and mutual processing of each other's drafts and text fragments became our central mode. Rather than aiming for a linear working process and narrative, we sought fragmented visual organisation to capture an accurate picture of a personal experience. An unsteady landscape, a carpet of two voices was woven. Wandering through dreams, fears and observations, it is a thing as nebulous as it is precise.
