Cerro Torre - Via dei Ragni
Some details for the people who are interested:
We (
@emaclimbs ,
@jeremartina_ ) saw a long weather window approaching and quickly decided to attempt the ragni Route. On the first two days, we approached the 30 km and climbed up to Col des Esperanza. Traversing the icefield really distorts distance—it took us three hours to cover ground that looked like a one-hour walk.
Progress was good the next day on easier 70° ice pitches leading to the base of the Elmo, where the first crux awaited. On the Elmo’s left side, we climbed a short mixed section followed by steep ice runnels. Beneath 30 cm of rime, we found solid ice, perfect for placing screws — a super-fun pitch like every other one 😍.
More mixed climbing followed, which proved both harder and more beautiful than I had expected. After a section of easier terrain, we squeezed through a goulotte, then faced a slightly overhanging chimney and the glorious headwall as the last sun rays hit the wall. Right after the headwall, we bivied on a mushroom.
The next morning, Ema and Jere led quickly through the first two mushrooms. We waited 2–3 hours at the final pitch, watching
@maciejbedrejczuk climbing/aiding through the rime — it was spectacular! After the polish team topped out, we let the team ahead pull up our rope rather than lead the final pitch ourselves. Not really the way I wanted to climb this pitch, but it was already getting late… Soon after, we reached the summit 🤩.
We rappelled back to the col, bivied there again, and then descended, hiking 50 km out over Paso Viento with barely any food left. The empanadas were super good after all the hiking.
Thanks again to Ema and Jere. I couldn't have wished for better partners. It’s rare to find people with whom the mood and teamwork stay so positive on such a long route🫶.
