Guardian of Bali During our visit to the Brahmavihara-Arama Temple in North Bali, I sketched this guardian figure in watercolor. The temple, also known as the “Great Monastery,” is the largest Buddhist monastery in Bali, beautifully blending Buddhist calm with Balinese Hindu symbolism. This statue represents a Dvarapala, a mythological temple guardian rooted in Hindu and Buddhist tradition. With its fierce expression, blue skin and club in hand, the Dvarapala stands as a protector at temple entrances, keeping away evil spirits and safeguarding sacred spaces. These figures are both awe-inspiring and deeply symbolic – a reminder of the powerful blend of art, spirituality, and mythology that defines Balinese culture.
