I did not realize how bad the situation was in Iran until I circled back to the story a few days after the headlines and read about it in greater detail. If you have not done so, do so. When I say the Iranian state is slaughtering its own people, that is not an exaggeration, it is an accurate description of its nature and scale.
All I want to say on the matter - I am not qualified to say anything else - is that so much slaughter and cruelty in our world is not random, but calculated; and its aim and parameters are demarcated in polite language in boardrooms and consulates, out of view. Pictured here is the chief diplomat of Iran speaking to Aleksandr Fomin, the representative from the Russian Department of Defense to all negotiations regarding the ongoing war. Both of these men are willing to serve cruel masters. Both these men, for a paycheck and the prestige, devote their lives to accomplishing the ends of tyrants. America is filled to the brim with people like these; they are winning, and have been for some time, and they live and die happily unnoticed, unaccountable for the destruction that they leave in their wake. There will be no justice until people like these are haunted by the crimes of their handlers; there will be no truth until the windows of their chambers and the doors of their offices are broken through, and all of the words they have said in secret hiss out to the gathered public.
The people of Iran have seen much worse than we have, and they refuse to be silenced. We have a lot to learn from them.
