In September 2024, while driving through Greece I stumbled upon an abandoned NATO military base, with two large satellite dishes reminiscing of radar and monitoring practices close to the border with Albania. Back then it became very clear to me that this military institution was never about protecting "the people" but Western interests, hence a military base constructed in the 60s close to then socialist countries. A month earlier NATO's Instagram profile had posted a Brat-stylized meme with the word "Peace". Whatever trend-following reason that was, it struck me that amidst a genocide the post featured "Peace", with blurred lines. And that says it all. Now on 24.06.25 The Hague is hosting the NATO summit. Global leaders are here to shake hands, destabilize sovereign countries and incite war, in the name of "security", "threat", and "peace". This is not the interest of European people, when NATO has a history of war crimes (e.g. in Serbia, Afghanistan, and Libya) and was founded upon imperialist intentions. Mark Rutte, born in The Hague, ex-prime ministry of NL and NATO chief, thinks the US is not breaking international law by starting a war in Iran. Rutte is complicit in war crimes in the Middle East and reinforces NATO's colonial objectives. Rutte is also pushing the agenda that Europe must be able to "defend itself" by allocating more budget into militarization, AI & quantum computing systems for war. This laser-action back then spoke about surveillance and colonial practices. Now it feels incredibly close, in a dystopian The Hague. Ways of Sensing: Signals in Circulation 20.03.2026 20:00–22:00 (Doors | 19:30) at iii workspace, The Hague Listen closely as language, sound, and images are set in motion, circulating through connected and isolated nodes. Ways of Sensing #2 brings together three works that interrogate systems and their notions of time, control, and circulation. In all works, signals are not treated as stable messages but as material processes that change as they pass through technical, spatial, and institutional conditions. @lucatorsera is an interdisciplinary time-based media artist with works around video surveillance, artivism, and light design to critically approach non-human agents, legal systems, and spaces. In A Life in a Camera a laser interacts with a CCTV camera, with the output displayed on a CRT TV. Dust and microorganisms reveal patterns formed over years of surveillance, uncovering internal traces. You are invited to see the connections between the life of decommissioned technologies, and its decay in the face of organic matter. Excited to be part of Special Issue #28: Amazing Machines: Wordscapes to Liberate Language, as part of my master's program @xpub.pietzwart We worked for two months under the guidance of Steve Rushton to produce writting machines and experiments with text and language. We also hosted a weekly radio show @radio.worm and on wednesday Nov 19th we will present some outcomes of our research at Ubik, WORM. I'll present Marginalia. A new project that takes selected texts in different historical contexts, and transforms them in experimental annotations engraved in canonical books, in an attempt to center the margins of history. Explore how light interacts with space, sound, and material through a hands-on workshop and a collective light jam interdisciplinary media artist on 23 October, 18:30—21:30 and 24 October 15:00—22:00. The workshop is led by multidisciplinary artist, Luca Tornato [ @lucatorsera ], who is an interdisciplinary media artist whose work moves between surveillance, artivism, and light design where he explores the politics and materiality of illuminated environments. At the end, participants will build up for a group light jam afterparty and can take home a DIY light controller and a 5-meter LED strip. The workshop is provided by iii – an artist run, community platform supporting new interdisciplinary practices linking performance, technology and the human senses.
