When I arrived at Oberlin as a 17 year old one of the first pieces I heard there was Steve Reich’s Piano Phase, written in 1967. The idea behind the piece is so simple yet genius. One pianist plays the pattern and never fluctuates their tempo while the other pianist pushes the tempo slightly ahead to offset their part by one note. Then again. And again. And again until finally coming around again to unison. It is for me, a transcendent experience as a performer. There is a kind of physical disassociation that happens that sets my mind free. Over the past 25 years I have performed the piece multiple times, always as the phaser. I’m delighted to be playing it with my dear friend and collaborator (of 30 years!) @matthewlduvall who really is always game for anything. 🥰
Here we are in the middle pattern of the piece, which is my favorite of all the patterns.

We wrapped up our January rehearsal period and loved being guests at Northwestern University for their newly launched Convocation Series.
We were deep in the studio preparing music for our spring season — with upcoming stops in Minneapolis, San Antonio, Chicago, Kalamazoo, and upstate New York.
