Art to AI to Art - Vision to AI Art?
Made my first steps in ComfyUI. But once in front of it, what do you do with it?
I had the idea to ingest a piece of art.
I painted a squared hue circle a few years ago - with my own hands, with real paint, on a canvas.
Back then I wanted to find out whether you can really create all logical gradients with subtractive colour primaries (you cannot).
It took me about 2 weeks.
The painting is now hanging at my parents house.
I simply photographed it, gave it ComfyUI to eat and asked to spit out a description of the painting.
I took that description and generated a row of pictures.
It still looked rudimentary (see first pictures).
Then I started to change and modify models, params and iterations.
Things started to get interesting.
I added to the text prompt what my personal intentions with that painting were.
I tried to become more precise and exact.
The results narrowed down to something - still - different, but they actually started giving me something like “a creative response”.
So what is the end of it all?
The end is that I would have never recreated my painting with AI.
In the end one of these results actually inspires me to paint again.
In the end creative work is based on a dialogue.
No matter if you have this dialogue with yourself as a painter (and I did have quite a dialogue back then when painting!) or whether you are working with someone else (another artist and/or with generative AI)...
In the end you have to be clear about your own creative vision.

Baselight M for MacOS - I was in good company during my last cinema grading!
So in the near future I might pop up with my Baselight Setup and connect with your team.
What I like about it? Control, artistic precision and logic.
The internal tools like chromogen facilitate precise colour nuances in look development. Colour conversions are rock solid.
The Machine Learning tools are unparalleled.
The system is incredibly powerful in conforming, insertion of versioned VFX, filtering all sort of metadata, fixing, handling the whole timeline, adapting to other viewing environments, rendering… etc.
Control and logic come by using it.
So girls & guys: there is no excuse any more - go check it out!
It‘s there, for MacOs, it’s dead easy to install and it’s fun!
Oftentimes it’s criticized of having an „intimidating GUI“… well, don’t be afraid! You can handle this! It’s not biting you and it won’t explode (hopefully).
If it does: you are surrounded by a great software support (yes, real persons on the phone).
It becomes actually powerful when you use it and not when you get lost in „But Resolve is cheaper“ discussions. I also use Resolve a lot. I acknowledge it and I grade on it with the same eyeballs in my head. These two systems are really not comparable. You know it when you use it. ;)
Sorry, Baselight is no audio nor editing tool.
Baselight is a deep dive into grading, conforming, mastering and DI workflows for qualitative output. It is used in order to focus on what’s on.
Its functionalities are meant to control common issues in picture finishing postproduction.
Check it out, give it a try and join the community of advanced professionals in postproduction - a community of helping-hand-mindset.
See you there!

Colour Grading along the German-Ecuadorian colonial history… The German natural scientist and geographer Theodor Wolf renews the maps of Ecuador in 19th century. He is still celebrated as an Ecuadorian hero.
When Wolf returns to Germany, he leaves his Ecuadorian maid (and wife?) Jacinta behind - and the children he had with her.
Was it due to the socially deep rooted racism why Jacinta and the children remain unmentioned in the family track? Little is documented. No note left of Wolf’s Ecuadorian family.
Later in time, the „Ahnenpass“ of the Wolf family remains „clean“ for the German Nazis.
Paradoxically some of Wolf‘s Ecuadorian descendants themselves are proud of their „whiter skin“ - still today.
Dario Aguirre, one of Wolf descendants from Ecuador, goes back to find out about the „Ecuadorian Mother“ Jacinta, inevitably facing the colonialistic tunes of Wolf’s time.
He finally ends up meeting a relative from the German family branch.
Was a pleasure to be part of this journey!
Gracias por este diálogo!

Another little collab with talented @zamarinwahdat on Life Debts - a film about subtle racism & discrimination.
Racism is barely as clear as black and white, but is most violent „in between“.
Lena @lena__hetzel finds the fine line to make subtle racism visible merely through posture, glances, gestures… until violent action.
The solidarity among victims adds a comforting but bitter note to it.
Together with the lovely Frogs @theglassfrogs and crew we had some fun in cinema grading.
Had some colour fun this summer with Ghost School, a pakistani-british-german coproduction directed by @seemab_gulll , shot by talented @zamarinwahdat , coproduced by @redballoonfilm@st_gerdes and supported by @cine_complete .
Here are a few first stills, more to follow.
The film is currently premiering at TIFF @tiff_net in Toronto.
