We made a zine for Bite Back! A pop up on the purple sea urchin decimating the kelp forest. Featuring a text by Josie Iselin @josieiselin HUNGRY GRAZERS OF THE BULL KELP FOREST Urchin and kelp are constantly at battle over domination of subtidal ecologies; when the urchin populations are kept in check, either by human economies or natural predators, such as the sea otter and/or the sunflower sea star, the kelp forests grow lusciously dense, creating three-dimensional dynamic habitat for all the attendant fish and invertebrates to hide and reproduce safely. When urchin populations are not kept in check, the stability of the habitat is lost and the kelp forest can transform into an urchin barren – bare rock bristling with a carpet of purple and red urchins with no kelp in sight. This ‘regime shift’, as it is called, can be swift. The nature of this co-evolutionary dance between urchins and kelp has been absorbing scientists and ecologists around the world OK for decades. Other articles feature texts by @kalie_granier in collaboration with @ohlonecostanoanesselennation and @ahlecks89 This is an #activateoakland event sponsored by @visitoakland @oakland This event is hosted by @purpleuniclub and @loudspringart at @o2aa.oakland Featuring fresh uni brought to you by diver @monk.dadi.lola and purple uni dye by @margaretseelie Thank you to Karitas Roach-Swann and @lekunkel for the design and layout. THIS SATURDAY! Come by Oakland's Ecofutures Festival at the intersection of community, art, and activism. Enjoy free art making, screenprinting, fireside chat by @westoaklandeip and @grahamlairdprentice , artisan market, food pop-up, pop-Up bar + Music featuring a DJ set and performance. . . 🗓️ SATURDAY, JUNE 15 ⏰ 4pm to 8 pm 📍 @o2aa.oakland 2311 Magnolia st, West Oakland 🎟️ Free w/ RSVP - link in @loudspringart bio 🔗 Meet @graham the artist behind the public art installation The ‘Fencelines’ Project, which proposes participatory art models for engaging the refinery landscape of Richmond and West Contra Costa County, where the petrochemical industry has polluted the air, water, land and people for generations. Designed to amplify the voices of community here, individuals and families are invited to record their messages which will be highlighted through large scale installation format on the fence-line itself, documenting the impact of this industry on many lives, and together forming a monument to collective resilience. The ‘Fencelines’ Project vision is for collaborative public artworks that can act as a bold statement to Chevron and other polluters; creating a unique, celebratory monument with community in Richmond, to share with the world the messages of people on the frontline here. ‘Fencelines’ has been an on-going collective project since 2020, begun by Graham L.P., & Princess Robinson, which convenes a group of local artists, designers, and community organizers to vision projects for urban environmental and infrastructural transformation. The ‘Fencelines’ is the culmination of relationships and creative work built over time. Graham L.P. is an artist and architectural designer, born Oakland, CA 1985. He believes artworks can be a platform to facilitate collective expression and celebrate interdependence—often organizing around contested bodies of air and water. He works primarily in large-scale public installation projects and participatory formats. He is a Jewish man whose family goes back 5 generations in Huchiun aka unceded Ohlone Land. Coming up: a food pop-up by @bolitamasa at @loudspringart ’s next Ecofutures Fest on June 15th, 4pm. RSVP link in the bio 🎟️🔗👆 📍 @o2aa.oakland 2311 Magnolia st, Oakland, CA 94607 In 2020, Emmanuel Galvan started Bolita out of his San Francisco apartment, after years of tinkering with nixtamalization and masa. With the goal of creating fresh masa, tortillas, tamales y más for the entire Bay Area. Bolita began as an idea to bring more fresh masa to the Bay Area. It has always been a project of connection. A project of reclaiming identity. It began with lofty aspirations and a dedication to exploring masa and Mexican heirloom maíz. All for the sake of understanding an identity of a Cali kid from Mexican parents Bolita exclusively makes masa with Mexican, landrace maíz. They use local and organic ingredients for all of their rellenos, salsas, guisados.
