Path to the house, pass by the herbs, wash up, and drop your basket on the shelf for next time. Like our project in Sonoma, our latest designs are unpacking the beauty and experience of utility.
It's been a recent obsession with how the practical arts of growing food can be thoughtful and inspired.

On a hillside in the Berkeley Hills, a family of creatives needed a place to exhale.

1. The Story, with each space showcasing a different plant, like a series of scenes or discrete acts unfolding.
2. The Song, with more repetition in the plant layout, a chorus, and a similar beat throughout.

Swipe through to see the careful process of cut + fill, ensuring no material goes to waste. Carving out only the flat spaces that will be needed, letting the slope resolve itself everywhere else.
Helenium puberulum, our star perennial at 'Serpentine', defines the mood and softens the stone. It reminds us that the most powerful material in any garden is alive.
This native perennial (commonly known as rosilla) has strappy green leaves and a spherical flower that bobs over other plants. She thrives on riverbanks and seeps, great for low spots in the gardens.
