We are pleased to announce the 2026 Burnham Prize: The Future of State — a call for bold visions to reimagine Chicago’s historic “Great Street.”
Presented by the Chicago Architectural Club, with the generous support of World Business Chicago (
@worldbusinesschicago ), and partners including the Chicago Architecture Center (
@chiarchitecture ), Chicago Loop Alliance (
@loopchicago ), and the Loop Arts District, this year’s competition invites forward-looking ideas to reshape State Street as a more vibrant, inclusive, mixed-use corridor in the heart of the Loop. From its legacy as a retail and cultural hub to today’s moment of change, this is an opportunity to reconnect the street to the life of Chicago, as both an everyday destination and a civic stage.
Shaped by landmark buildings from architects like Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, and Holabird & Root, State Street has long been a center of civic and commercial life—where architecture, culture, and daily activity converge—and now, at a new inflection point, invites architects, urban designers, landscape architects, artists, and interdisciplinary teams to imagine how it can once again thrive.
From adaptive reuse and housing to culture, retail, landscape, and public life, proposals should transform State Street into a true destination—where living, working, and gathering intersect, and the street belongs to everyone.
