I’ve long wondered if Mt. Mummery’s complex north face could go on skis. It’s the kind of line I associate with Chamonix. Relentlessly technical, steep, draped with ice and guarded by huge seracs. Except it’s set in the remote Blaeberry valley of the Canadian Rockies, above a long approach from valley bottom with only ravens and the occasional grizzly bear for company. A blank spot on my map for years. Like any good blank spot on any good map: here be dragons!
Last week, Logan and I headed out for a few nights in this gorgeous valley to see if the moment was right. First we skied Mummery’s south summit/southeast ridge, where we found great turns while taking a good look around.
We liked what we saw, so the following morning we rallied back up to the north summit. One last drone flight to see the entirety of the line (what a handy tool that is), then I roped up and hopped in to test the snow. With both of us trusting conditions and our ability to handle whatever came next, I unclipped and started skiing.
A long, exposed spine committed us to the descent. The position here was incredible! That got us to the first crux, which our drone photos had helped us underestimate. ~45m of rappelling later, we enjoyed traversing turns across the hanging face to an exit sneak from the otherwise terminal glacier. Feeling tiny amid towering seracs, we made our last rappel as efficiently as possible.
Finally, the release of clearing the multiple bergschrunds and broken lower glacier, skiing off the face 12 hours into the day. What a moment, what a mountain, what a line! The main Mummery Glacier itself is no gimme and the sun was sinking low by the time we navigated the exit, packed up camp and left the valley.
Every now and then, the stars align and the mountains allow us puny humans passage through places we surely don’t belong 😅Thanks for believing, sharing the experience and nailing those v-threads @logweeze !

It's so awesome looking back at all the exciting places you find yourself getting to on a splitboard. Its even better when you think about all these amazing experiences were shared with a rad crew of friends. Thanks to @inffni for the 📸, @thugdaddywarbucks for coming out of retirement, unclebacon for breaking trail with me, and @powslashingwigley for being down to stay out there an extra couple days to play crib in windstorms and tag off some super fun firsts…
This specific line was a solo fist known ski/snowboard descent - the giant cleft @cathedrallakeslodge@sparkrandd@cherokeepurple
The dogs days of spring…
Cruisin the mountains with the pup, slurping corn lattes, and patiently waiting for that infamously illusive spring pow cycle…
It’s been great having Wiggles and Dougy come visit and help keep me sane while I wait for lines and objectives that may not come in this season and may never come to fruition for me… such is the reality of our changing weather and recession of glaciers.
Luckily, times like these help to remind me what it’s all about. Chill days with good friends in the mountains!
Enjoy the little things ppl… it’s what’s most important in life!
And a tired dog is a good dog!

Fun times checking out the Icefields this past week!
A little line shopping with a lot of creek crossings, dirt trails, rocky moraines, iso slop, wind buffed pow, and smoooth corn!
Wouldn’t have had it any other way!

SPEAKER HIGHLIGHT: Matt Ruta & Christopher Logan
Matt Ruta
A skier, mountaineer, and endurance athlete based in Golden, British Columbia, Matt is driven by steep lines, long climbs, and fully human-powered days in the mountains. Raised in the Canadian Rockies, he grew up moving through alpine terrain on foot and skis, shaping both his big-mountain objectives and competitive pursuits. He currently trains with the Canadian national skimo team as the sport prepares for its Olympic debut at the 2026 Winter Games.
“Over the past year I’ve been so fortunate to live some incredible stories in mountains close to home and at the end of the world, with people that truly inspire me. I can’t wait to catch VIMFF in person for the first time and share a few of those experiences!”
Christopher Logan
A seasoned splitboard mountaineer based in Golden, BC, Christopher (also known as "Logan Logan") is known for riding less-visited lines across the Selkirks, Purcells, and Rocky Mountains, and for seeking exposed terrain from Alaska to South America. His approach blends experience, aesthetic movement, and long human-powered days, with multiple first ski and snowboard descents to his name.
Their VIMFF 2026 Presentation: Beyond the Summit, Into the Line
Together, Matt and Logan share a grounded, visually rich conversation about long approaches, human-powered ascents, and choosing commitment in steep terrain.. where decisions matter and every turn is earned.
