Finally getting these photos up from the Fluid Zouk Cabin Retreat back in April 🌀 I’m still in awe that we were able to dream up, organize, and bring this experience to life in the span of a month and a half. 😅 What unfolded was such a sweet, intimate weekend of dance, learning, laughter, connection, shared meals, cozy cabin energy, and deepening into Brazilian Zouk in a way that felt both playful and embodied. @logan_moves and @caos.milla taught some truly fantastic classes that were practical, creative, and full of those subtle concepts and drills that don’t always get taught, but make such a big difference in how grounded, comfortable, connected, and expressive you feel in your dance. Happy International Dance Day! This November marks ten years dance dropped into my life and changed me fundamentally as a human being. Why does Brazilian zouk still have me in a chokehold after all this time? More than anything, I love the way this dance feels. I love its synchronicity. Social dancing brought me a new way of noticing people. A way of experiencing and communicating with nuance and subtext in a world that requires so much explicit verbal confirmation. It’s my drug of choice, a form of therapy, my preferred way of communing. It is the cult I claim. Not everyone needs dance. I do. It feels so rare to capture videos in a completely improvised dance where I’m in flow state, which makes this one minute clip feel all the more precious. There is no rush like the kind I get from dances like this one where it looks like water, but if you asked me what it felt like, I would tell you it felt like the feeling after a volcano has erupted—not the actual eruption itself—but the moments after when the molten lava runs over the course of the earth consuming everything in its path. Who knew dancing could feel this way? That I could feel like lava? More than anything, I hope you find the thing that moves you the way dance moves me. Don’t just watch, take a moment, to FEEL what we FEEL too 🫂 @caos.milla helped me experience a major perspective shift around demonstrations… 🤍 As we were watching a few together, I realized I was taking them in by how they looked and she was taking them in by FEELING what the dancers FELT within each and every demo. This realization that someone I look up to so much was experiencing these videos this way was liberating for someone who can get quite insecure about their demos. “All I have to do to have a great demo is have the dance FEEL GREAT?! that’s easy!” Before this demonstration in Pittsburgh, I rooted into that intention. First demo after our first weekend teaching in Denver, diving into all the crazy stretches and playful moments we explored in class ✨ Sharing the floor and the classroom alongside @logan_moves feels really inspiring. We have a full month ahead of us on this tour, and I’m feeling really grateful and lucky to be living this.
