7th session of The Slater Listening Society

So how was it? Amid yesterday’s noise at Hà Nội Phở, after the event, I thought I heard Martins Kohout say that almost all the pieces they had chosen were earworms —as if, instead of trying to get them out of their head, we were all deliberately invited to embrace them.
I was going to describe what the proposal we came together to listen was like, but thinking about it, neither “coming together” nor “listening” captures what happened. There was an encounter, yes, but without any of us leaving the cars that Amelie, Constantin, Victor, and Vivien drove to Hellweg’s lot. I could describe it as a shared sonic experience, sure, but with the tracks slightly out of sync, phones lit up with tracklist credits on them, two videos and the cars parked nose to nose with their headlights on, it was hard to want to close your eyes.
We began with Ray and Archie Fisher’s version of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘸𝘢 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘦𝘴 playing on a loop—a dark Scottish folk ballad about two crows planning to feed on a fallen knight. Once we were parked, nine more pieces followed, played at full volume inside the rental cars. More ear-catching melodies, including a version of the ballad recorded by The Corries; hyper-intimate vocals such as Lucy Liyou’s; and collective cathartic moments like the drums and panflutes of Qhantati Ururi.
There is a word I was meaning to use in this text but I haven’t managed to sneak in: 𝘸𝘰𝘮𝘣.
