✨ New work ✨ Black on the Square, a new event celebrating the breadth of Black culture and creativity organised by @mayorofldn & the BOTS advisory board. Music, live performances, film, photography by the incredible @jenniebaptiste , food, vendors, community organisations, and creative workshops brought Trafalgar Square to life for the first edition of this annual event. It was great to see my designs plastered all over the square for such a joyful occasion. 💫 NEW WORK by Studio Tallawah 💫 Last night we welcomed friends and family to the preview of ‘Cornwallis Cloth: The Second World War in the Caribbean’ at @oldroyalnavalcollege in Greenwich. I’m overjoyed to present the work of my newest venture @studio_tallawah , an exhibition design + creative design studio, conceptualising, designing and producing this visual exhibition (with the help of my brother @silvertooth10 ) ((see: installation manager 🫡)). 💫 New work 💫 I took my design skills to The Toon! @gnm_hancock ’s ‘Explore’ room has had a makeover 💜 I’m very excited to share my exhibition design, that I created with the guidance of the museum’s lovely team, and a group of local volunteers who committed almost a year of their time to ‘reimagine the museum’ and their archives. Thank you: Alina, Malavika (@yem.yay.yell.you ) + the GNMH team, Dan, Ken, Johurun, Nneoma, Rose, Shabnam + Yasmin. And (magician) Col for print + install. Croydon’s Caribbean Influencers, previously at @museumofcroydon , leaves its second home @nationalportraitgallery today. Working on the second iteration of this exhibition design project, no less for the NPG, was most definitely a work highlight of 2023. Seeing and hearing the stories of our Caribbean elders from Croydon come to life again, plus the injection of life and stories of todays greats, added a presence rarely felt in such an institution. We opened Croydon’s Caribbean Influencers in October 2023, coinciding with Windrush: Portraits of a Pioneering Generation, which remains open until 1st April. More details on my side-project @blkartmap . Keep an eye on the beautiful talents of @shaniquabenjamin_ (Croydon’s poet Laureate) who created the poetry, soundscape, and curation of the exhibition, and @kyamarts (digital artist) who created the portraits of Croydon’s community featured in the exhibition. @nationalportraitgallery is open until 6pm today. “The Caribbean has many deep and powerful oral traditions, spanning as long as the spoken word itself. Whether through music, poetry, fables or everyday conversations, oral traditions have created pathways for many Caribbean individuals living in the UK to travel across seas and generations. As an artist, I wanted to explore how these oral traditions could combine with visual art in a way which still spoke to the history. The Record Shop is a concept which pays respect to the deep-rooted oral tradition of music, whilst combining audio and visual art mediums together. Listen to the stories of some of our Caribbean Influencers, as we celebrate some of the lives that have influenced our communities.” - @kyamarts Croydon Records - featuring Croydon’s Caribbean Influencers of today, is open every Wednesday and Friday 11am-4pm.
