What an incredible two weeks we’ve had in the Canary Islands! 🌋🚴♂️
One of the experiences we offer at Thomson Bike Tours is private trips, and this last one with 3Nations was amazing once again. Two weeks of pure cycling across three of the most remote Canary Islands.
We can confidently say this is one of the best destinations in the world for riding a bike. Over these 14 rides, we climbed more than 4,000 meters on several days, tackled brutally steep climbs with gradients up to 30% ⛰️🔥, and even rode up Roque de los Muchachos—a 2,425-meter ascent that takes you from sea level all the way to the top of a volcanic crater. We also circled the entire island of La Palma in a single stage and discovered some of the most beautiful and hidden roads you can find on two wheels.
This post is just a small glimpse of the adventure ✨
Beyond the Comfort Zone: El Hierro 🌋🚴♂️
They say “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” But sometimes, to find the best rides, you have to leave the comfort zone and take a risk on the unknown.
El Hierro is arguably the least popular and hardest-to-reach Canary Island. It has the fewest tourists, the smallest population, and zero mass-market “all-inclusive” vibes. But for a cyclist, that’s exactly what makes it a paradise.
Why it’s unique:
• Pure Peace: Forget the crowds of Masca (Tenerife) or the busy climbs of Fataga (Gran Canaria). Here, it’s just you, the wind, and the Atlantic.
• The Landscape: Postcard views and pristine tarmac.
• Sustainable Soul: It’s the only island in the world powered 100% by renewable energy. 🔋🍃
• The Vibe: No speed cameras, only 4 gas stations, and locals who actually respect and welcome cyclists.
Pro-Tip: This is the “wild west” of cycling. Connection is spotty, shops are rare during the rides, and bike rentals are non-existent. If you’re coming, hire a tour operator. You don’t want to be stranded on an island this isolated! @thomsonbiketours
If you’re looking for a “bracelet resort,” look elsewhere. If you’re looking for nature and soul, El Hierro is the place. 🏔️
