Austin Open 🥇🥇
Master 1 Gi:
Won my division by submission (only had one fight)
Signed up for the open but lost by 3 advantages to a heavy weight 😵💫 This was a great match to learn from and take back to the lab 📝
Adult nogi:
2 matches in my division
First match: won by 3 advantages
Second match: won 9-0
Overall a great weekend and a lot of good experience that pointed to what I need to work on next.
ALSO, I am soooo incredibly greatful for my husband & jiu jitsu village (especially @ashley_kb_ ) . It’s not easy training and preparing for competitions with a baby on the loose but I’ve found there’s always so much support in watching Wally so I can train. This whole weekend I never had to worry cause I had a team of people making sure Wally was cared for while I warmed up & competed. I feel so lucky & I can’t thank my village enough. ❤️❤️❤️

1 year ago I was 4 months postpartum, leaving pans camp in tears due to another setback. My body was nowhere near recovered from giving birth. I wanted so badly to train hard and get back to competitions and my body was far from ready.
It took me about 4 more months until I was able to train hard for competition and even then there were more setbacks.
If you’re currently pregnant, postpartum, or dealing with a serious injury… I know it feels like you’re never going to get back to the mats but you will. Jiu jitsu is a marathon and sometimes “setbacks” are exactly what keeps us in the race. Breaks give you new perspectives, gratitude, and time to digest the years of hard training you’ve put in.
Now that I’m on the other side, here are some things that I didn’t wanna hear in the thick of it but in hindsight, rang very true and I hold gratitude for:
1. You get WAY MORE from watching jiu jitsu than you think.
If you can’t train, keep coming to class to watch from the sidelines. (Even if it’s once a week).
2. Like I said before, you’re going to look back on this time and realize it was just a *blip* in the long run. Hang in there.
3. If you’re jiu jitsu obsessed like me, use this time to enjoy other hobbies, time with friends and family outside of jiu jitsu, get outside more, start a creative project.
4. DRILL. On a dummy, with a partner you trust, doing movements that are safe for your injury.
From 20 weeks pregnant -> about 8 months postpartum I didn’t roll hard without a setback or pain.
What I did do was drill and strength train and I’m so thankful for it. I can see how much it helped me during this time off now that I’m competing regularly again.
I know it’s hard to see now, but this is temporary. 🫶
