Opening May 8, SKIN DEEP turns the phrase upon itself when you give it to four figurative painters. Skin has no limit. It becomes a home, a place of tenderness, yearning, intimacy, confinement, expansion, play.
We welcome you to join the artists for the opening on May 8 from 6-9pm at Base Camp Studios (2407 1st Ave) during the
@belltownartwalk .
Over the past five months, Ava Code-Williams, Nahom Ghirmay, Kade Marsili and Lizz Slabaugh, four artists’ whose individual work prominently features the human figure, came together to pass between themselves four 4×6’ panels at Base Camp Studios 2. Each artist approached the panel afresh, responding every few weeks to whatever the previous layer asked for. The process was quiet, accumulative, and responsive, communicated only by brief notes left on the walls from artist to artist.
Each panel has its own origin without expectation of outcome: a childhood photograph; an imagined landscape; a coloring book worthy under painting of a friend; a red shape and construction paper cut-outs exploring how figures and shapes might overlap.
Although viewers will know these works as the finished paintings, the artists know them as their layers.
