I’ve spent decades of my life on this magical sliver of coastline, riding countless thousands of waves and watching now-forgotten sunsets. In part, it has been my own personal quest to experience, and perhaps momentarily understand, my place in this natural world and vast ocean upon this beautiful, wild, and fascinating planet. I have nothing tangible to show for these hours and years in the water, no accumulation of wealth or major possessions, besides a handful of sea-polished rocks and shells and an array of well-used, dinged-up surfboards. And while I don’t have answers as to who and what we are, and why we’re here, I do have a few insights when it comes to seeking harmony and flow with the ocean, and thus with life. Slow down, breathe, and look around. Watch nature, learn from her ways. Look out for the wild creatures and their habitats. Take less, give more. Possessions may bring comfort, but they won’t provide you with health, harmony, inner peace, or love. Protect the sacred, natural places that you treasure, or they won’t be around.
