What if robots could tell the story of becoming yourself, one delicious color at a time?
We visited Janet Bruesselbach (grad 2009), painter and alum of the
@newyorkacademyofart
Itâs studio was filled with vibrant, humaniform robots and other creatures. These figures felt playful, expressive, and deeply alive. Janet welcomed us with enthusiasm, sharing how many of these characters began as âdream monsters,â inspired by people they know and transformed through imagination, humor, and a maximalist love of color. It gives a voice to the nonbinary queer experience.
Itâs project, Lunoids, is a monthly oilâpainting cycle created throughout 2025.
Each painting depicts a pinupâstyle humaniform robot themed to a specific month, occupation, and color, arranged in a clockâlike palette of organic synthetic pigments.
Drawing from Sebring & Rochaâs Study of Pose, Janet reinterprets these figures with specialized body types as segmented, mechanized, and shaped through a fully handâdriven, nonâAI âartistâautomatizingâ process. The series grows out of their long engagement with speculative fiction and labor ethics, bringing bold, maximalist aesthetics into a materialsâdriven fine art framework.
Janet is now developing a sequel series for 2026 titled Solaroids! Aliens mapped to eight pigments, semiâseasonally and to planets.
The result is a world of colorful, expressive robots that feel both futuristic and deeply human, paintings that stretch the boundaries of figurative art and invite viewers into a universe where imagination, embodiment, and storytelling meet. The colors practically glow.
This visit is part of our ongoing New York Academy of Art studio visit series, highlighting the diverse practices and creative paths of NYAA alumni. Weâve already visited several studios, and weâre excited to continue building this growing archive of artists and their evolving work.
If youâre an NYAA alum and would like to be part of this series, feel free to comment below or click the link in bio.
Thank you, Janet, for the incredible visit and for welcoming us into your studio and your brilliantly painted universe.
