@thinkdotank Foundation and @scribblekidsbooks are exceptionally proud to announce the three winners of our 2025 MIRROR Mentorship program for emerging bilingual writers and illustrators in kids’ literature are: Leila Frijat, Lia “Lima” Maula, and Huaning Wu.
Leila Frijat: “I deeply aspire to create a bilingual children’s book that reflects the multifaceted identities of Arab kids. I want to create an exploratory space for children who can often feel pressured to simplify or reduce their existence into a singular description of their identity.”
Lia Maula: “Growing up, I’ve had to move around between countries and cities, and I’d like to cater to an audience with the same experience in hiraeth. Adjusting to new environments as a kid can be difficult and I hope the things I work on can aid them in that experience.”
Huaning Wu: “I transitioned to illustration three years ago from a different field. Influenced by my mother, an art teacher, I grew up with a love for art and solidified my focus on illustration during university. Since then, I have been dedicated to exploring diverse styles and expressive techniques to bring stories to life for young readers.”
This program provides a year-long mentorship with Zeno Sworder, Sher Rill Ng, and Freda Chiu respectively, plus publishing masterclasses, industry networking opportunities and a $4,000 stipend for each mentee.
The Mirror Mentorship program has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body. @creative.australia

This painting is part of a project that’s been on the back burner of my mind for over 2 years.
@imgaruu and I first conceptualised this project right out of uni. We worked on it for a while, but after a few months it got pushed back due to other life priorities.
It’s easy to feel guilt and shame over the piles of projects that get “left behind”. The thing is there are so many factors that go into a project, sometimes you can’t be in control of all of them. It may not be the right time, place, or environement in your life to let the project thrive. And that’s ok.
Just know that it is there for you to pick up again when the opportunity arises. And if it aligns with what you’re working towards, the opportunity WILL arise.
For me the opportunity came through @an.othercollective in the form of an exhibition. Being surrounded by other creatives whose vision aligns with yours is something you don’t realise you’re missing until you find it. It has given me the space to look back on those “left behind” projects and finally pick them back up again. 🌷

Two sisters on an adventure at night
As they walk through the darkness
With light
In the darkness, the younger sister cried
Cause she lost her shadow
Her older sister then assured her
To accompany the night
To look for her shadow
The older sister comforted her
And told her
That the light within her is bigger
Bigger than the darkness surrounding
And that her shadow will come back
They both hug
And the two sisters
Slept
Slept soundly
They both learned the meaning of light
That love within them
And the light in the morning
Gave way to the return
Of shadow of the younger sister
-In this world, there are many darkness, and evil things happening. But through the story, I hope people will be reminded that the light within, and the light among them (through love and support) can overcome darkness.
