We're off to Asia for today's final @internationaldayoflight reflection.
The Pohang Accelerator Laboratory in Korea welcomes over 8,000 scientific visitors a year.
At the entrance of PAL-XFEL, the phrase “Welcome to New Science” invites researchers and visitors into a place where light opens new frontiers of discovery.
Through PLS-II, the synchrotron, & PAL-XFEL, the free electron laser, cutting-edge research continues to advance our understanding of materials, energy, life, and the environment—contributing to scientific solutions for a sustainable future.

Our next stop on our @internationaldayoflight tour of light source facilities is @synchrotronsolaris , Poland’s national synchrotron radiation centre.
How can synchrotron light support sustainable agriculture?
At the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS synchrotron, researchers used synchrotron imaging techniques to trace zinc transport in plant roots and better understand how plants adapt to nutrient-deficient soils.
This research may contribute to the development of more efficient fertilization strategies and support more sustainable food production in the future.

Excitement is building here at Lightsources HQ!
We are one sleep away from the 2026 @unesco@internationaldayoflight .
This global observation highlights the vital role light plays in science, culture, art, education, and sustainable development.
This year's theme is Light for a #Sustainable Future and with, 27 light source members representing 32 large-scale science facilities around the world, we have much to share when it comes to the amazing research that is being done to secure a sustainable future for our planet.
We'll be sharing updates from our members over the next week and invite all those whose research links to sustainability to join us so we can show just how important light sources are to this vital field.
#Synchrotron #Science serves sustainability and circular economy. @esrf_synchrotron - The European Synchrotron, is a strong partner and active actor of the European programme ReMade@ARI , which aims to put Europe at the forefront of circular-economy materials research.
In order to meet the challenge of designing new materials that are both competitively functional and highly recyclable, researchers use ESRF's bright X-rays and capabilities to carry out in-situ studies and characterisation of materials through techniques such as tomography and X-ray diffraction.

Reflecting on an incredible week of connections at #SRI2024
Last week, Lightsources.org travelled to Hamburg to be part of one of the community’s most popular events. SRI2024, organised by @follow.desy and the @europeanxfel , attracted over 1000 experts. The conference gave us the opportunity to celebrate our 20th Anniversary with scientists and technical experts from facilities, academia and companies within the international light source community.
Lightsources.org is particularly keen to support early career professionals and, to support this goal, two lunchtime sessions were offered during the week. The first focused on career insights and development and the second put the spotlight on science communication.
The poster prize competitions were also sponsored by Lighsources.org SRI 2024 Science Poster Prize
1st prize went to Renan Ramalho Geraldes from Sirius at Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) for the poster “The Loading Chamber of the SAPOTI Cryogenic Nanoprobe at the CARNAUBA Beamline at Sirius/LNLS”.
2nd prize went to Tang Li from DESY for the poster “Real-life challenges of single-beam ptychography vs. multi-beam ptychography”.
3rd prize went to Jan Lukas Dresselhaus from the Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging for the poster with the title “Aberration corrected multilayer Laue lenses enable focusing to below 3 nanometres”.
Jan Lukas Dresselhaus also won the Science Communication Poster Prize. 2nd prize was given to Amna Majid from European XFEL for the poster with the title “Fault detection in Ion Pumps at the European XFEL”. 3rd prize went to David Meier from Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for his poster with the title “Offset finding of beamline parameters on the METRIXS beamline at BESSY II”. The SRI 2024 Science Communication Poster Prize (Public voting) was awarded to Emmanuel Aneke (APS at Argonne National Laboratory) for the poster “Simulation and Measurement of Horizontal Emittance via Undulator High Harmonics at the APS-U”.
The next SRI conference will be in 2027 in Brazil

Excitement is building at Lightsources HQ as we prepare to travel to Hamburg for #sri2024!
We are thrilled to announce that, as part of our 20th Anniversary celebrations, we will be offering delegates the opportunity to attend two lunchtime sessions during SRI2024. The first is our #Careers Q&A on Wednesday 28th August. We have gathered a brilliant panel including Britta Redlich, Gianluigi Botton, Sakura Pascarelli, Gerd Materlik and Laurent Chapon. Our Vice-Chair Isabelle Boscaro-Clarke will chair this session, which will provide a great opportunity for you to bring your career questions to some of the community's most experienced leaders.
Hope to see you there!
We'll reveal details of Thursday's lunchtime session tomorrow 😉
