CHECK OUT FULL TRAILER @thelineanimation When we were approached to work with @coryxkenshin on a trailer for his brand new manga @monsterswemake I have to admit, I had no idea who he was. I spoke to my nephew Ashan and his reaction told me everything I needed to know. “Uncle, you have to do this” Cory was even kind enough to say hello to Ashan on a call which made his day. (And gave me uncle of the year award)
MONSTERS WE MAKE reminded me of when I was in my teens trying to draw my own comics .I was hoping to make the next DBZ 🤣. I tend to enjoy all the projects I work on even when they’re challenging but there’s always something special about working on an IP that no has ever seen; To be involved in early stages before the world gets to have their say. You get to leave a small mark, it almost becomes your baby. Regardless of your following or reach creating something from scratch then sharing it is an anxiety inducing experience. Imposter syndrome is reeeeeaaal.
I’m honoured that Cory and his team reached out and trusted us with this project. They didn’t have to get this trailer animated so it speaks volumes to their passion for their project and it’s the same ethos we have @thelineanimation Cory invited us to be a small part of this comeback and celebrated everyone involved. I’ll be forever grateful. Thank you Cory @robbiezs Vince @vinmagazine you guys are a class act and I appreciate you. I already miss our weekly catch ups. Congrats to you and your team, can’t wait to read the comic.

Happy Monday everyone. Here are some model sheets and preliminary design work I did for The YT Izzo Promo. I finalised all the designs for animation but the initial concepts were by @voidlab1 Co director @wabbla had a major influence on the hero character and “The Unknown” (sorcerer). It’s always fun when you have a range of contrasting silhouettes to play with. Tengu was my favourite to draw. Heavily inspired by Kawajiri.

IZZO is a piece I co directed in 2020 with Alvise @wabbla Zennaro @thelineanimation for YT Industries with Shift Active Media.
Our team was small but it was such a blast bringing this to life. I actually got to do character design, with the help of Alvise, based on initial designs concepts by Andreas @voidlab1 John, creative director at YT. I’ll post some BTS next week.
This project was super collaborative. I really was amazed at how far YT and shift let us go with this.
For the music and sound, we have @bxftys long time collaborators to The Line (over 10 years now). I’m not being bias, but this is my favourite track from them. 😏
We were also very fortunate to have @togoigawa as the narrator. We got chills from his first reading. His gravitas legitimised the whole project. Fun fact, he played Gotesu in Street Fighter Assassins Fist. So yeah, Izzo was narrated by the master of Ken and Ryus master. 🔥🔥🔥 My one regret is not getting a picture with him, such a pleasure to work with. (I think I played it a little too cool)
I’d love to talk about the challenges we had but honestly it was so much fun and when you’re working with people that just bring it every single day the challenge becomes how to NOT have fun 🤣

I first came across Dragonball while on an art exchange in Montpellier France with my mate Dexter. I was about 14 years old. We went to a comic store and me being me, my attention went straight to the manga section. DragonBall instantly caught my eye. I didn’t know what it was, who the characters were, but I was completely in awe and fell in love on the spot. The books were Japanese, but that didn’t matter. I had to have them. I could only afford 2 out of 42 book collection, so I chose volume 15 and 26 which I still have to this day. What amazed me is that although it was in another language I could follow at least 80% of what was going on; a testiment to Mr Toriyamas ability in visual story telling. I found a shop in China town back London and spent about 3 years collecting all 42. Again all in Japanese. (They were expensive 🤣) Each one I bought I’d go through them page by page spending ours studying the drawings and creating voices for what I think the characters could sound like.
The first time I saw an English translation was in 2000 on a family trip to St Lucia. I tuned in everyday for about 5 weeks. I don’t know how I managed that. I remember annoying my family always rushing back to my grandparents house to watch or record it no matter where we were. This was where I saw Goku become super Saiyan for the first time.
It would be no exaggeration to say that since visiting that comic store, Dragonball influenced my art style and ideas almost exclusively (with Otomo and Masumne Shirow being close seconds) for at least 6 years and pretty much underpins anything I’ve done since.
It’s crazy how someone you’ll never meet, never talk to can have such a profound impact on your life. How one person can inspire a generations of artists to make movies, comics, toys video games…The list goes on.
Thank you Mr Akira Toriyama for inspiring us all to do what we do, for keeping us engaged in our pursuit of art and reminding us how much fun this can be. Hope the Snake Way and King Kai’s Planet is what you imagined it to be. Rest Peacefully. 👊🏾🙏🏾

5 years ago today, I dropped this teaser trailer for The Mighty Grand Piton. It also was the day St Lucia celebrated its 40th year of Independence. This to date is probably the most important and most fulfilling work I’ve ever done. I came to the realisation that it’s ok for me to tell fantastical stories that directly relate to me and my cultural heritage. It was also terrifying on so many levels. I have so much more to say about this project and I know you probably have even more questions. (When are we getting a series? Is one I hear a lot😅). I’ll speak more on it later.
All that being said. I promised myself this year, one way or another something will come of this. Stay tuned. ✌🏾
