Some closeups from the art I did for the magical @allisonhsaft ♥️ Every time I read Allison’s work I’m reminded why I love books, why I love stories and why I love literature. Her writing is genuinely a breath of fresh air and her stories are utterly exquisite, so working on this for her was an HONOUR. Immortal Game is so beyond tasty and I can’t wait to get my grubby little paws on a UK edition. >:) #immortalgame #allisonsaft #bookillustrations #bookillustrator #bookart
From sketch to stage: every stitch, stain, and silhouette tells a story.
The costumes of Cable Street carry the characters from the page into the spotlight—revealing who they are, where they’ve come from, and what they’re fighting for. 🎭 #costume #london #westend #theatre #behindthescenes
And Sammy from the core trio, performed by the brilliant @isaacgryn 🙏
Costume details below.
Sammy’s costuming prioritises utility jacket style, a cropped 1930s silhouette and a sprinkle of modern underpinning with his dark converse. I wanted Sammy to have a nod towards modern street style so his jacket is a retailored modern piece, shoes are converse, etc. His family colour is Green for the Sheinbergs, so he has a green neckerchief that he only takes off near the end of the piece when his mental state is unravelling (echoing Ron) and when he is pulling away from his family.
Halfway through the battle there’s a fun costume change from Sammy’s nice clean borrowed shirt from Moishe to his grungy, bloodied, sooty battle shirt. We also see Sammy get a job at a printing press during act 1, and to help carry that story through I had the employees of the press wearing pinstriped blue aprons smudged with ink and black marks. Sammy wears the same apron in act 2 when he commandeers the printing press for his own uses - just gives an extra sprinkle of context to the action of him using the press as we didn’t have one on stage!
I wanted Sammy to have that likeable roguish charm in his costuming that’s so brilliantly echoed in the script, music, direction and Isaac’s performance choices!

Ron’s costume for Cable Street as performed by @barneywilkinson_ ♥️ Detailed ramblings below.
I wanted a really softened version of Ron for this iteration of @cablestmusical - something that could show the softness and naivety of his character before things start going wrong. He’s wearing red - his family colour, but also a way to show an interesting divide during the end of the BUF anthem, he’s between the red rosettes of the communists and the red armbands of the blackshirts. The sweater vest was a way to show a homespun, softer feel for his character in Act One, only to lose that softness as his costume is influenced by the military jackets and harsh black of the BUF uniform. By the end of Act 2, Ron and Sammy unravel on the same trajectory and that’s echoed in their costuming, both stripped back to shirts, braces and trousers in a state of disarray. Both lose their family colour palette (Ron’s vest, Sammy’s neckerchief) as they both lose their way. It’s one of the elements I played with this time, alongside a smidge more pattern clashing.
I love the combination of Ron’s warm grey-brown pinstriped jacket with the knitting pattern and then the wool trousers. It’s an intentional mismatch of hand-me-downs and loved-before items.
♥️

Cheeky side by side for the costume drawings vs the final result. So happy with how gorgeous @lizzy_rose_esin_kelly ‘s costume came out. Long dissection below:
The decision to create an elevated and playful pinafore dress look for Mairead felt really important to me - she’s a confident, playful and joyful young woman shaping her future through the choices she makes, and I wanted her to have that femininity combined with the neckerchief that a lot of the men in the production wear. Corduroy for durability and an extra depth of colour for the dress, soft brushed blouse to give a puff sleeve, bringing in more of that playful androgynous sprinkle with the doc martens and the socks (which are colour coordinated to her act one and act two colour combos respectively!).
Vibrant blue tones tie her into her family dynamic- each member of the Kenny family wears blue as a playful signifier for the audience and to delineate space (there are frequent moments where all three families are playing in the same space), so colour blocking them in subtle ways felt like an extra way to nurture that idea of separate spaces, separate stories and separate identities.
Mairead has sprinkles of red in her Act one outfit to show her teasing communist leaning, and then in act two she wears a light blue, a way of having her own colour palette within the Kenny family colour palette while also coming into herself as a person.
Another secret favourite is her aprons- act one is doused in flour and looks a lot cleaner, versus in act two she repurposes it for the battle and it gets sooty, bloody and grungy as she gets stuck in.
Nice little ramble for your design consideration! @cablestmusical #costumedesign #costumedesigner #theatredesign #theatredesigner #cablestreetmusical
