This recording marks the first volume of music drawn from deeply expressive recording sessions captured in Kolkata in 2019, featuring the late tabla maestro Pandit Subhankar Banerjee who tragically passed away in 2021. Recorded in the cultural heart of West Bengal, this album captures an extraordinary artistry and dialogue between two deeply sensitive musicians at the height of their creative powers. A rare synergy between two master musicians, this album preserves one of the final recorded collaborations of Subhankar Banerjee, while showcasing Prattyush’s boundary-pushing vision for the instrument. With its depth, sensitivity, and masterful interplay, the album affirms Prattyush Banerjee’s place among today’s most compelling voices in Indian classical music, and honours a cherished collaborator whose rhythm continues to resonate. The lyrics draw on the work of Hazara poet Aziza Fayaz, whose writing on Hazara rights speaks to wider experiences of marginalisation and resistance, echoing broader struggles against fascism and authoritarian rule. Musically, the track channels the trance-inducing spirit of Qawwali, Gnaoua, and Indian classical traditions, refracted through psychedelic rock, post-punk, and electronic dance textures, creating a sound that feels both devotional and insurgent momentum. This song carries a message of resilience, liberation, and revolution, asserting that freedom is never simply granted to the oppressed, it must be defended, sustained, and fought for through collective struggle, it must be won!
