A visit to this bookstore, Présence Africaine, was one of the highlights of my thus far two month stay in Paris. It is also the oldest Black owned publishing house in the world, founded in 1949, that solely focuses on works by Black authors from Africa and its diaspora, who deal with Pan-Africanism, Anti-Colonialism, and Liberation, as well as fiction, and poetry. All of the books are in French. The bookstore has been on Rue des Écoles since 1962. » David Diop @presenceafricaine

One of my oldest friends, David Henderson, has passed on. He was an extraordinary poet, diligent biographer of Jimi Hendrix, and playwright (we produced his radio play, Ghetto Follies, together at KPFA radio in Berkeley). He really influenced the way I think …. such a brilliant, sweet and mischievous spirit. I took this photo of him in 1973. 💔

My mom was honored at the Hammer Museum gala last night. Can you believe she’ll be 100 in a few months? And her fit!!! I’m so extremely proud! (I’m out of the country and very sorry to have missed it) 📸 Tracye Saar Cavanaugh @tcav21 @betyesaar @hammer_museum

Saudade is a word for a particular kind of longing - a melancholic nostalgia and yearning for an absent place or people, and a state of mind intrinsically linked to the Brazilian and Portuguese disposition. Los Angeles-based artist @lezleysaar chose the word deliberately for this series of portraits. Saar seeks to reflect this sense of saudade in her portraits, given that each of the women endured forced or voluntary migration in her lifetime. In Issue #1, we are proud to feature Saar’s work as part of Tar Baby’s commitment to visual art that carries the same depth of intention as the written word. See the full series in Issue #1 at tarbaby.com.

I think people need to stop saying that the French are rude. I’ve been in Paris, albeit up north in the 19e, for about three weeks, and everyone has been so nice. It’s almost unreal. 1) Parc des Buttes Chaumont 2) 19 arrondissement 3) Musée Gustave Moreau 4) Parc des Buttes Chaumont 5) Église Saint Jean Baptiste de Belleville 6) Friends 7) Sacré Coeur 8) Halle Saint Pierre 9) Apartment kitchen window 10-11) Canal Saint-Martin 12) Église Nôtre Dame de la Croix 13-15) Jardin des Plantes 16) Galerie de l’Evolution 17) Candle Kids 20e 18-19) Parc Belleville 20) Ménilmontant 20e
