CURRENTLY FYNDING: LORD JAH-MONTE OGBON (@jahmonteogbon ) 🔍 Lord Jah-Monte Ogbon is a North Carolina rapper who’s become a fixture of the modern rap underground by bridging the gaps between drumless, boom-bap, and abstract hip-hop with wit and style. Jah cut his teeth in the Charlotte music scene, both releasing his own music and blogging about up-and-coming artists in his area. By 2020, companies like Copenhagen Crates began to take notice of the way he could weave flexes, love stories, and unrefined shit talk into concrete bodies of work like “Words of Wisdom” or “Too Little, Too Late”. “I just took a lot of risks with this album. You know what space we’re in, as far as this indie underground sound, so I wanted to use this as an opportunity to really take a leap.” (Via @cabbageshiphop ) After dropping several projects a year for a good chunk of the 2020s, he eventually signed to Lex Records and slowed down to begin work on As of Now, his formal label debut. As of Now features production from some of underground hip-hop’s finest, from Navy Blue and Laron to Thelonious Martin, Nolan The Ninja, and Jacob Rochester. Their beats both compliment Jah’s tongue-in-cheek worldview and push his pen and flow to their limits, further broadening the range of his stories as a Black man navigating through 2026. The rap world has started to take notice in a serious way, with Pitchfork giving As of Now its vaunted Best New Music ranking, mentions in NPR, and a stint opening for Armand Hammer on their recent run of shows in North Carolina.
