Throwback to Fireplace Cinema on March 20th when I had the pleasure to welcome Elisabeth Povinelli for a screening and conversation around the work of the Karrabing Film Collective. Here a short snippet from my little essay: “Cinema might be the illumination and elucidation of the mere existence of the other within a world haunted by otherness. Gathered around this projected image, attending to this unstable mirage, we become a temporary social body that holds a certain utopia of connection, a potential for a precarious solidarity with the fleeting presence of bodies appearing on screen. In the Karrbing Film Collective’s unique cinematic language, developed over nearly fifteen years now, we become aware how various layers of video shot on simple iPhones can make images think, dream and act all at once. The need for their cinema reaches far beyond representation or even self-representation: it is a means for resistance and struggle, an affirmation of the life lived now, and lived previously by ancestors or in the future by those to whom we are becoming ancestors. It is a desire to live responsibly and in connection with all other living beings.” More soon and thank you to all people who made this possible! #karrabingfilmcollective #elizabethpovinelli #fireplacecinema @levelfivebluescreen @caillou.filmfestivaldefilm @ritcs.research @ritcs.school.of.arts @s_m_o_g_music @emmavanderput @alasdairasmussendoyle @learose_vr @lietjebauwens

This Friday 🔥 Elisabeth Povinelli & Karrabing Film Collective: Fire, Film and Ancestral Dreaming. Date: Friday March 20th, 7pm doors & food, 8pm screening & conversation. Location: SMOG, Avenue Van Volxem 380, 1190 Forest. Entry: free contribution in support of Congolese squatting collective. Food: pay on the spot, prepared with love in support of Congolese squatting collective. Supported by Future Narratives, RITCS School of the Arts We are delighted to welcome you to a special evening of screenings by the Karrabing Film Collective in conversation with founding member and critical theorist Elizabeth Povinelli. Having written on the impasse between liberal systems of law and value, and indigenous worlds in Northern Territory, Australia, Elisabeth Povinelli is a co-founder of the Karrabing Film Collective in 2010 as a means of collective storytelling and territorial assertion. Consisting of over 50 members, the indigenous media group employ film and art installations as a form of grassroots resistance and self-organisation. Meaning ‘low tide’ in the local Emmiyengal language, karrabing refers to a form of collectivity that exists beyond government-imposed strictures of land ownership. The collective emphasise that the films themselves remain secondary to their ongoing struggle for land recognition. In conversation with Povinelli, we consider how filmmaking as a medium and film spectatorship as a mode of encounter, might contribute to politics of territorial resistance and to a refusal of life as prescribed by neo-capitalist norms. If cinema is a technical apparatus brought forward by colonialism and conditioned by extraction, how might it also - haunted by ghosts from the past - reflect the stories of ancestral beings and enduring connections to land? The event is a collaborative initiative by the research project Fireplace Cinema, RITCS Research, Blue Screen Level Five and Caillou Film Festival. #karrabingfilmcollective #elisabethpovinelli #fireplacecinema @levelfivebluescreen @caillou.filmfestivaldefilm @s_m_o_g_music @ritcs.school.of.arts @ritcs.research @emmavanderput @alasdairasmussendoyle @lietjebauwens @learose_vr @gawanfagard

@publiekpark is more than only an exhibition - it’s a living ecosystem that connects art with its green environment in a public dialogue. Therefore, we proudly share documentation from the public programmes and our third publication Walking Guide. Walking Guide intertwines essays, archival fragments, and artistic voices to trace both the exhibition route at Plantentuin Meise and the historical journey from the creation of the Jardin Botanique in Brussels to its relocation to Meise. Like a quilt, it layers perspectives, textures, and timelines, linking artistic narratives with reflections on urban gardens, public space, and botanical imaginaries. Featuring texts by Nikolaos Akritidis, Denis Diagre-Vanderpelen, Koen Es, Lana Jones, François Makanga, Noam Youngrak Son, and Jean Watt, alongside photographs by Michiel de Cleene, the book was designed by Victor Verhelst and Corbin Mahieu. Launched on 3.09 at the steps of Botanique, writers François Makanga and Noam Youngrak Son presented their essays, while artist Myrthe van der Mark enriched each copy with drawings. The programme continued on 14.09 with film screenings by Blue Screen (in collaboration with Level Five), a guided walk by Nikolaos Akritidis, and performances by Roy Köhnke and Elise El Yousfi. The closing nocturne on 28.09 at Plantentuin Meise featured a guided tour with the curators and writer Lana Jones, and an experimental film programme by Art Cinema OFFoff, including works by Jef Cornelis and Léonard Pongo. 📖 Walking Guide will soon be available through bookshops and distribution platforms dedicated to art publications. In the meantime, you can reach out to [email protected] to get your copy! Photos by Lars Duchateau, Corbin Mahieu, Victor Verhelst, Emma Van Der Put, Anna Laganovska & William Ludwig Lutgens.

Surprise, surprise... the new LuCi recs are here! 🛎
If your weekend wasn’t already jam-packed 🏳️‍⚧️🌈, we’ve got some fresh recommendations coming your way. 🐿 This Saturday, Level Five is opening all of its ateliers. To celebrate, the talented Blue Screen team is hosting a free screening featuring works from Level Five residents 🌾. Swing by Rue Gabrielle Petit 6 to see their films, performances and ateliers. 🎥 Also, don’t miss the last Bluish screening at Bozar tomorrow. In Bluish by Lilith Kraxner and Milena Czernovsky, people, stories, and places become interwoven, 🪢 a poem about the ambiguous desires inherent in queerness. The film screens at 14:00 this Saturday in Le 23, Bozar. A few tickets are still available—don’t sleep on it! 🎟 🗺 And if you haven’t seen it yet, there’s still time to catch Sammy Baloji’s L’arbre de l’authenticité at Bozar. This powerful film explores how Belgium’s colonial past has unleashed ecological devastation in Congo—an unmissable and must-see film. 🌌 Finally, there are still some tickets left for the open-air cinema at Beursschouwburg, on the occasion of Kunstenfestivaldesarts. The Falling Sky by Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha and Eryk Rocha is a portrait of Indigenous peoples in Brazil and their fight against deforestation. Go out, watch, talk, listen, be critical, be generous… Love,
LuCi

The studio of NC will be transformed to a cinema with a massive screen with a size of 11 x 4 meters! This film programme is co-curated by @levelfivebluescreen . 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐦 𝐊𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐲 Graham Kelly is a visual artist and filmmaker. His practice is situated in the interfaces between contemporary forms of images, physical bodies, and environments. By considering these interactions as engulfing and continuous states or effects, his work seeks to expose and dissect power structures that are cast, distorted or enforced within them. 𝐄𝐯𝐚 𝐋’𝐇𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐭 Eva L'Hoest's (@evalhoest ) practice uses digital language as an archaeologist's tool to address questions of origins and memories. Through combinations of sculptures, performances and audiovisual installations, she explores how collective and individual mental images can be reactivated and reanimated in technological forms. 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬 𝐑𝐚𝐟𝐚 Janis Rafa (@janisrafa ) lives and works between Amsterdam and Athens. In April 2025, she will present a new body of work as part of her solo exhibition at EMΣT | Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens. In 2023, she had her solo at Eye Filmmuseum and in 2022 her work was part of the 59th La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Cecilia Alemani. Parallel to her art, she is currently developing her second feature, entitled ‘The Future is an Elder Cow’. 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐬 Thomas Swinkels (@thomasswinkels ) is a Berlin-based artist from the Netherlands. His practice moves between sculpture, photography, video, and installation. From 2017 to 2019, he was a participant in De Ateliers in Amsterdam and in 2023 he was a resident at Wiels, Brussels. 📅 Save the date: 31/10/2024 18:00 - 22:00 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐈𝐍𝐆! 01/11/2024 14:00 - 18:00 02/11/2024 14:00 - 18:00 📍at MILL #Needcompany #visualarts #artfestival #Brussels #art #Molenbeek #youngartists #exhibithion #performanceartists #installation #curated #EXPLO #exploration
