A Portrait of Frédéric Nauczyciel (1968-2025) / 2019-2020 / Cincinnati, OH

Just learned my friend Fred is now dancing with the angels.
I have so many fond memories of working with Fred while he was here in Cincinnati. He was a focused artist who worked in many of the same media as I do, so we spoke the same language during our collaboration. You’d think that would have made it easier but because we were so different we regularly clashed. The clashing, though, was what made being friends with Fred even more special. With me, he sought to understand and then we’d talk through our differences. It got to the point where he was encouraging me to be more assertive and aggressive with him. He was the rare demanding artist that didn’t completely act like the world revolved around him. I introduced him to his two favorite restaurants in Cincinnati: Tucker’s and Alabama Fishbar.
Through him I was introduced to aspects of the world-wide LGBTQ community and cultures I didn’t even know existed. Fred was an advocate for the poor, the immigrant, and the downtrodden.
Bonne soirée, mon ami.
