Until three days before the race I was 99% sure I wouldnāt be able to take part. In week 11/16 of the training block I got Iliotibial Band Syndrome. I trained through the pain only making it worse. I had no choice but to start skipping training. What initially started off as, āhow many runs can I still do without making the injury worseā quickly turned to me not being able to walk without a limp. I saw physios and doctors yet it wasnāt getting any better. I went for a test run the week before the big day and 200mās into it the pain started flaring up. Mentally I hit a new low. Initially I didnāt want to race with the risk of a DNF. Long story short after doing everything I could there I was on the start line, not knowing how long Iād be able to run for without the pain becoming unbearable. With a cortisone shot, Iād carbād up, wrapped the knee, spammed voltarol and painkillers and left the rest to fate. My initial goal of a sub 3:30:00 had turned to ālet me get this medal and come back stronger next timeā. Lo and behold I managed to run the whole thing. miracles really are possible!
I immersed myself in the life of a full-time athlete for three months. I love the grind, THIS IS WHAT I LIVE FOR. Words arenāt enough to express how this has shaped me.
