As THE MADONNA OF ASIA finishes its sold out run, we just wanted to say a massive thank you to our incredible team, The New Theatre and the audiences who joined us for our Cantonese cinema inspired odyssey this week.
It was a great privilege to get to work with such a wonderful team, some of whom are pictured above, to tell a story which felt vital & fresh for Dublin audiences. We hope to do it all again soon & thank you 💫🥳⚔️
LemonSoap looks forward to presenting more exciting work later this year too so watch this space 😉
PS. We know there’s a lot of closed eyes in the above pic but it’s cute so we’re posting it!

Now that THE MADONNA OF ASIA is open we can finally share a first look courtesy of the incredible photographic talents of Aiesha Wong!
We couldn’t be more chuffed with the response of our sold out audience last night and we can’t wait to share it with as wide an audience as possible over the next four days.
This visually sumptuous & orchestral show is designed by @choy.png on set, costume and video, @batmurk on lighting and @lara_galll on sound. You don’t want to miss their gorgeous and transporting work this week. 🥳

With THE MADONNA OF ASIA just one day away, we thought we’d share some insights into the piece from its director, writer, costume set & video designer, Choy-Ping Ní Chléirigh-Ng.
The play is an epic and heartfelt exploration of Hong Kong cinema, stardom, isolation & connection. It promises to be unlike anything onstage in Dublin this week and we can’t wait for you to see it.

A sneak peek into our first tech day yesterday for THE MADONNA OF ASIA!
We’re under orders not to give any spoilers but our first day of tech did include loads of Panem cookies, loads of crumpled letters from long lost lovers and the Great British Bake Off. And if you want to know what that’s all about come see us this Tuesday to Saturday at The New Theatre!
Tickets are flying out the door so book now at the link in our bio! We can’t wait to see you from this Tuesday 28th April. 🥳

“I felt like I wasn’t seeing the type of work and the type of representation that I wanted to see. So with this, I just thought I’m going to give it a go – I might not be the best or most qualified person, but that was my motivation,” they say.
“I think what I wanted to show is a fully developed, complex female Asian character in her 40s. I’ve never seen that here in Ireland.”
Thank you to Azmia Riaz and the Irish Independent for this insightful interview with Ping. They discuss growing up mixed race in Wicklow, their Hong Kong heritage and THE MADONNA OF ASIA as a piece of work which unites all of their artistic interests.
You can read now online or in any good newspaper and tickets are selling fast so nab one now at the link in our bio!

Next week, April 28th to May 2nd, Choy-Ping Ní Chléirigh-Ng 吳彩萍 & The New Theatre present THE MADONNA OF ASIA in association with LemonSoap Productions.
Once Asia’s brightest star, Rin Asari was poised for global fame with the release of her first film in English. But soon after, she vanished. It’s now 2014 and Rin, in her forties, lives quietly in Dublin. By chance, she connects with Tara, a woman living in Hong Kong. Such a chance connection ushers forth a past Rin has long tried to forget and when she soon after receives an unexpected offer to return to the screen, Rin must finally confront what she left behind.
Inspired by the golden age of Hong Kong cinema, THE MADONNA OF ASIA weaves together live performance, vibrant projection and multilingual storytelling. Moving between myth and memory, this piece traces a woman’s journey from icon to exile and back to herself
Starring Mai Ishikawa and featuring pre-recorded performances by Clare Barrett, Agnes Hui 許雅名, Kaai Onozaki and Jun-Ling Clarke-Ng.
Performed in English, Japanese and Cantonese. Japanese and Cantonese dialogue is captioned in English.
Supported by Dublin City Council Project Arts Grant and Incubation Space Award, Irish Theatre Institute, PROPEL Programme with the Strollers Network, Rough Magic Theatre Company and The New Theatre Artist in Residence Programme.
Tickets available now at thenewtheatre.com.
