Solar Powered Art and Energy Transition Design - May 12, 2026 @ 6PM at Ridgewood Commons @alexnathanson will present two new projects that are particularly relevant to permacomputing. First, he'll discuss methods for designing around the unique characteristics of solar power, which is the focus of his upcoming DIY solar art book. He will also talk about his work with community virtual power plants, which are distributed networks of batteries that provide services to the electricity grid and generate value for communities. Alex Nathanson is an educator, artist and designer focusing on practical and experimental applications of sustainable energy technologies, particularly photovoltaic solar power. Alex runs the design studio Energy Transition Design LLC and education platform Solar Power for Artists. He co-created the Solar Protocol project, with Tega Brain and Benedetta Piantella. His book A History of Solar Power Art and Design, was published by Routledge in 2021. His next book Make: Solar Circuits for Artists will be published by Make this year.

The next Permacomputing NYC meetup takes place Tuesday April 14 @ 6pm at @ridgewoodcommons nyc.permacomputing.net/ Jailbreaking Old Devices ( with @samanthiik ) > At this meetup Sam Heckle will lead us in a demo of “jailbreaking” to get old devices hampered by planned obsolescence up and running again (think old phones, media players, game consoles). We will be looking for ways to play around with the existing hardware and re-incorporating them back into serviceable devices, running a web server, media player, and more. We'll also continue our discussions on permacomputing and ways we can hack existing devices to extend their longevity and limit our own production of e-waste. Devices are planned to become obsolete, and it is our job as soft(ware) custodians to maintain, cultivate, and care for these old and forgotten tools. Please bring your old devices/phones/game systems. The talk will demonstrate jailbreaking iOS devices but you are welcome to bring what you have.

𝐀𝐥𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐯𝟑.𝟎 March 26 – 28, 2026 Gray Area 2665 Mission St, San Francisco aaassembly.org Limited spots left for the workshops. All workshops take place Thursday, March 26 in-person at Gray Area. • All three workshops are beginner-friendly, but participants should have some basic familiarity with programming. No advanced experience is required. • A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. Apply by March 20. • Please note: the festival pass does not include workshop access ############ Build Your Own Fantasy Code Editor with Char Stiles 12 – 3 PM Calling all creative coders! Ever wished you could tweak your code editor or design your own? In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore how code editors work by building one yourself, then experiment with playful and unexpected variations. We’ll start with a writing prompt and a short look at the history of creative coding tools, then build from a simple web-based p5.js editor using JavaScript. ############ Computational Poetry for 100 Years with Lee Tusman 1:30 – 4:30 PM <100 years in the future> A great-great-great-grandchild unearths an ancestor's heirloom computer from the family's forest storage unit—a silver box from the pre-solar era. They manage to power it up. An ancient bell chimes. The display flickers to life, revealing a poem still running after a century. <present day> What would our computational poetry look like if we built it to last 100 years? In this workshop, we'll explore permacomputing principles and create small computational artworks and code poetry using L5, a minimal creative coding library built on Lua. ############ Integrating Real-time Neural Audio Synthesis in Sets and Productions with the Magenta Team (Google DeepMind) 10 AM – 1 PM Dive into real-time neural audio generation using Magenta RT (open-weights) and the Lyria RT API, exploring how to play with low-latency models as live, steerable instruments. We’ll look at how to give models a distinct sonic character through finetuning, and how to build custom interfaces that integrate into live sets and production workflows

#genuary #L5 #genuary2026 This month I'm participating in Genuary (see http://genuary.art ) and coding my projects in L5. Today's prompt was "Low res." I'm using photos I shot in Berlin at @zku.berlin and music I created in PureData. This animation / "filter" was created in about 25 lines of code.
