Join us at the Reginald Centre for our upcoming event with Marcia Hutchinson to celebrate her latest novel, The Mercy Step, shortlisted for the 2026 Women’s Prize for Fiction! Marcia Hutchinson was born to Windrush generation Jamaican parents in the UK in 1962. She was the first pupil from her comprehensive school to go to Oxford. She worked as a lawyer before founding the educational publishing company Primary Colours, which she ran until 2014. She was awarded an MBE in 2011 for services to Cultural Diversity. Moving to Manchester in 2012, she became a community activist and was eventually elected as a Councillor in 2021. The book is inspired by Marcia's childhood, and is full of wit and resilience. Marcia will be in conversation with Lydia Williams, followed by audience Q&A and a book signing. Reginald Centre Community Hub & Library 21 May, 6:30-8pm Book now on our Ticketsource (link in bio) Tickets are pay what you feel ☀️ @marxia1

Fancy seeing some of the oldest and rarest items at @leedslibraries ? 🔎 Librarians at Leeds Central Library will be giving you the chance to get your eyes (and hands) on some of the oldest and rarest items held in the Leeds Libraries collection. On show amongst other fascinating items will be an 1894 calendar beautifully depicting a bread arch built from 1,500 loaves of bread as part of a royal visit to Leeds, lavish menus created by a noted Victorian confectioner for prestigious functions, including the banquet to celebrate the opening of Leeds Town Hall in 1858, and a scrapbook detailing the heroic exploits of the city’s renowned crew of Victorian firefighters and their inspirational leader nicknamed “The Fire King” by local newspapers at the time. The objects will be available to view as part of two treasure handling sessions taking place at Leeds Central Library on May 9 and May 23. To book your place, visit the link in our bio ☝️ #Leeds #LocalHistoryMonth #Leeds400 #LeedsLibraries #CommunityHistory
