🦚Peacocks symbolize many things to many cultures, immortality, beauty and protection. The many “eyes” on feathers are associated with all-seeing wisdom and watchfulness. My favorite is the myth of Argus, the 100 eyed giant who was Goddess Hera’s faithful guard. When he died, Hera honored him by placing his 100 eyes on peacock feathers. In India and China there are long textile histories of weaving its iridescent feathers into cloth, the task so time consuming and delicate, only reserved for the royalty. I decided to title it Woo, despite what we humans make of it, all that fuss is really about wooing a mate😆. “Parrhasius No. 72, Woo” 36x28” oil on panel. #bootycall #painting #trompeloeil #peacock #peacockpainting

When Paul Drinkwine of @lostincomposition proposed a show about works outside your own paradigm, I sent him this from an on-going series that started in 2018, when my dad’s loss of short-term memory became hard to ignore, despite signs we were optimistically in denial for a while. The series is a progression of this one burlap setup slowly becoming full of holes, transforming into something new. This No.6 is part of “Subversion”, opened today at @lostincomposition . Other images, No. 6 in progress, No. 7 still being worked on😅, and previous versions. 🙏🏽Thank you Paul for the opportunity to share this🤎 If in Seattle hope you catch “Subversion” up until 5/29. 🤎“Maw No. 6” 16x16” oil on canvas. . #alzheimers #trompeloeil #painting #artprogress #seattleart

Flowers are blooming! I paint woven flowers now, but i used to, next to windows. Painting from 2001 in Kansas City, from a tiny apartment for visiting faculty, across the street from Nelson-Atkins, it was warm, semester just ended, we had our window open and heard a minor accident, drivers talking, a peaceful exchange, it’s a self-portrait, I’m watching, above the bouquet of heavy peonies from @richard.mattsson an amazing painter who grew amazing peonies let me come over and cut them from his garden. “Car Crash and Peonies”(2001) oil on panel 40x28” #peonies# #painting #windowpainting #selfportrait @kcaipainting

I’m thrilled to be included in “Fabrications” by @garveysimon at Artisan Lofts 143 Reade St, TriBeCa, opening April 23, 5-7pm. In great company with.. @eozenagopian @ann.aspinwall @jeanneheifetz @kirstin.lamb @nealpaintingnow @o.rosenblat @andrasamelson @linda_k_schmidt Garvey|Simon is proud to present FABRICATIONS, fabric functions as both medium and motif—stitched, layered, constructed, draped, and painted—through which artists engage cloth and pattern as both material and language. The exhibition includes work by Eozen Agopian, who constructs layered, low-relief surfaces that merge sewing, textile collage, and paint into architectural compositions; Ann Aspinwall, whose process-driven works build subtle, vibrating surfaces through the accumulation of fine linear marks; Jeanne Heifetz, whose early works employ stainless steel mesh and glass rods to create suspended linear networks that hover between drawing and textile; Leeah Joo, whose trompe l’oeil paintings render draped textiles with striking precision, collapsing distinctions between representation and objecthood; Kirstin Lamb, whose paintings draw from cross-stitch and folk patterns, translating their grids into densely built, pixel-like fields of color; Patrick Neal, whose disorienting still life paintings reimagine the crocheted granny square as both compositional structure and motif; Marcy Rosenblat, who uses lace as both matrix and image, pressing pigment through its structure to generate intricate, patterned surfaces; Andra Samelson, whose paintings reinterpret woven structures through undulating, grid-based compositions, using stylized, almost cartoon-like distortion to animate bands of color; and Linda Kamille Schmidt, whose jewel-toned textile constructions interweave sheer and opaque fabrics into luminous, grid-like forms that emphasize transparency and structure. @garveysimon #artandtextile #artopeningsnyc #painting #burlap #nycart
