As a collective we at @4thworldmediaorg endeavor to support, uplift and amplify directors and creatives who have historically been marginalized, silenced and overshadowed by dominant culture and colonial western systems. It’s been a distinct honor to work with first time director @ninagualinga and co-directors @eli.virkina and @boloh_ in bringing this critical perspective on the extractive nature of spiritual tourism. The plant medicine hayakwaska (ayahuasca), marketed as a mystical shortcut to healing and enlightenment, is another example of what the Indigenous storyteller @ninagualinga sees as commodification and extractivism in the Amazon. Nina is from the Kichwa people of Sarayaku, Ecuador, and she speaks with the memory of her shaman grandfather, about the ongoing cultural appropriation, environmental destruction and marginalisation of her people, questioning our very relationship to the Earth and the quest for healing.
