Forty-six years ago today, Canada helped get six Americans out of Iran. The operation, later known as the Canadian Caper, involved the Canadian government and its diplomatic staff organizing a high-risk rescue for six Americans who had escaped the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.
The CIA contributed the technical “Argo” cover story, but Canada acted as the central organizer and the shield that made the plan workable. For close to three months, Canadian diplomats took serious personal risk by keeping the Americans hidden, including in private homes, to reduce the chance of capture. That effort reached its decisive point on January 27, 1980, when the Canadian government issued secret passports that enabled the group to fly out safely. Canada’s role did more than save six lives, it’s a reminder that even close neighbors can argue and still show up for each other when it counts.

I would like to wish Masai Ujiri all the best as he is no longer the vice-chairman and president of the Toronto Raptors. Masai helped put the Toronto Raptors on the global sports map and stage by winning the NBA Championship in 2019, and turning a struggling franchise around when he was first hired in 2013 where he made the Toronto Raptors into playoff contenders making the playoffs in seven straight seasons.
This picture was taken earlier this year on March 5th where I attended Masai Ujiri's Giants of Africa event and the Toronto Raptors 30th Anniversary Party. Masai Ujiri will be missed and I would like to wish him luck in whatever he does next in his career. Good luck Masai Ujiri!
