Death is encoded within the feminine experience. So viscerally are we reminded each month as the tides of blood pull us into remembrance of our mortality. A unifying biology that coaxes us into connection with the void - with endings. Which, of course, are followed by new beginnings, when our bodies grow fertile once more, the return of the inner spring. We create life, and we feel it’s passing. Together we experience the totality of the cyclical nature of being.
Those who do not have a womb are attuned to the death-life-death cycle, too. Being alive, we all feel these shifts every year, every lunar cycle. The plants die each fall only to return with verve in the springtime; the darkness of winter fades when the sun returns to full luminosity in the summer. The cyclical nature of being, if sensitively attuned, has just as much to teach us about creation as it does decay. Nature beckons us to notice how intertwined life and death always are.
The mythological interpretation of death-life-death cycle soothes me. I envision the alchemical symbol of the Ouroboros. The snake that eats it’s own tail. How we die so many times in this life - the many deaths of ego, the shifts in identity, the transformation of desire. The gift of being reborn, recreating ourselves day after day. Time bends us. Death demands change. Life promises its return.
