On March 8, 2025, International Women’s Day, the LEADHER Awards, presented by @rbc (The Royal Bank Of Canada), had the honor of recognizing Her Excellency Francia Márquez, Vice President of Colombia, with the prestigious Legacy Builder Award. Her Excellency Francia Márquez’s journey has been one marked by incredible adversity and groundbreaking achievements. She made history as the first Afro-Colombian woman to be elected Vice President of Colombia, a testament to her perseverance and resilience. From a young age, she has been an unwavering advocate for human rights and environmental justice, dedicating herself to protecting her community and territory from those who sought to destroy it. Her story is one of triumph over adversity, inspiring women and girls worldwide that a world of limitless possibilities exists; where women and girls can thrive, achieve, and win. Born in the mountainous region of Suárez, Cauca, Colombia, Márquez grew up amidst two rivers that defined her landscape and shaped her resolve to protect her land. Her fierce commitment to defending her community’s rights and environmental integrity fueled her rise as an advocate and a leader. A trained lawyer, Francia Márquez received the National Human Rights Award in 2015 and the Goldman Environmental Award in 2018, solidifying her reputation as a champion for justice. As Vice President, she continues to fight for the dignity and equality of all Colombians, especially marginalized communities. Her legacy is one of profound change, offering hope for a more just and equitable future for Colombia and the world. #leadhership #leadherawards #inspiration #empowerment #leadership

Earlier in March, I celebrated International Women’s Day in great company at the LEADHER Awards in Ottawa, presented by the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). Being recognized alongside other extraordinary women on a global platform was a tremendous honor. My sincere thanks to their whole team for this beautiful recognition. It takes a strong woman to raise another. As a recipient of an award that celebrates trailblazing women, I cannot help but reflect gratefully upon the ones who have been formative to who I am, and who I am becoming. From women, I have learned to lead with fierce courage, authentic love, and deep integrity. My mother, my sisters, my aunts, my grandmothers: there is much strength in the legacy I have inherited from the women in my bloodline. Both in this moment of celebration, and every day otherwise, I bow to the women who lead and inspire. In equal measure, I think gratefully upon the men who champion the women in their lives. From the men in my family, to the men on the @boltsafety team (including my dedicated colleague, Dominic, who joined me at the gala), to the men in our communities who refuse to tolerate a world which deprives any person of their rights, safety, and dignity, I see you, I thank you, and I salute you. Onwards and upwards, Vedanshi

Today is my grandmother Edith Emmekunla “Baby” Nylander’s birthday, and I am so deeply grateful to dedicate this reel—recapping the @leadherawards I was honored to receive on International Women’s Day in Ottawa, Canada—to my grandmother, my ancestors, and all the women whose shoulders I stand on. We come from a lineage of women who have been in service of others women, like my great grandmother Tabitha Nylander who owned a baker house and fed those who were less fortunate every Sunday, my parental grandmother who I am named after, who was a state certified nurse and state certified midwife in Sierra Leone, who ensured mothers could safely deliver their children, to my maternal grandmother who taught me about our culture when she poured libation every morning to all the ancestors who have gone before us, she too gave what ever she had to those in need. And my mother, who taught my sister and I how to lead with compassion, kindness, unwavering support of other women and most importantly, taught us how to be strong, loving and giving mothers to our own daughters. We have been so fortunate to understand what being of service means through these women and often times the stories of these women are over looked in main stream media. They have been my source of inspiration to use my skills as a storyteller to create a platform for women and underestimated voices to tell their stories. This would not be possible however if it weren’t for the women leaders and our allies who have empowered us with the opportunities to do so. This award is for all of us and I am so thankful to share it with you. I will do my best to ensure that I can pave the way for other women to stand on my shoulders. As the African proverb goes - “Because of them - WE ARE.” Thank you again for this distinguished honor LEADHER Awards, A special thank you to @gwenmadiba for seeing me! You and @deiondrasanders did an amazing job hosting the beautiful gala! I am still pinching myself being included with such a group of distinguished honorees including @tatyanaali @barkue @meagangood and so many more trailblazers! Congrats to you all again! 🏆 #womenshistorymonth #herstory #community
