The wider impact of UCL One Pool Street lies in its contribution to the regeneration of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and its surrounding neighbourhoods. By locating a major academic building within this evolving area, the project demonstrates how universities can play an active role in shaping inclusive urban environments. Through adaptability, inclusivity and long-term thinking, the project demonstrates how academic buildings can support innovation while contributing positively to their urban context, ensuring lasting value for both the university and the wider community.

Loneliness is increasingly being recognised as a contemporary epidemic, especially in densely populated urban areas where community is harder to foster and crowds offer anonymity, rather than the potential for meaningful connection.

With vision from CLI Dartriver, the Folgate Building was stripped back to its robust concrete frame, retaining 88% of the structure. Two-and-a-half floors were added, floorplates opened, and façades reskinned, delivering a low-carbon, light-filled, flexible workspace with terraces and a landscaped courtyard beside Norton Folgate.

This #FacadeFriday, we’re spotlighting Charlotte Building W1, designed by @lds_architects .
Completed in 2009, this Fitzrovia building is defined by its bespoke cladding and carefully modelled façade. Recessed “shadow boxes” and dotted fritted panels bring depth and variation, rounded corners sensitively respond to its location. The upper floors feature full height glazing, a sophisticated crown providing views across the City.
Together, these details create a façade that shifts with the light, balancing precision with a subtle playfulness - a fitting backdrop for Fitzrovia’s mix of creativity and commerce.

last week we presented our draft masterplan for Bristol’s iconic Western Harbour, which enjoys supreme views of the Avon Gorge and Clifton Suspension Bridge and spectacular harbour infrastructure.
The masterplan for @bristolcouncil builds on the historic assets of the area and proposes between 750 and 1200 new homes, upgrading the Bonded warehouses to create improved Bristol archives (open to the public) and loft homes. Together with a mix of new shops, cafés, and cultural & creative workspace, we will create a vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood.
Alex Lifschutz says “We want to make the Western Harbour area more accessible and enjoyable for everyone, vastly improving the green open space and waterside walks, planting hundreds of trees and improving ecology by removing the equivalent of 5 football pitches of tarmac. Pedestrian and cycle routes will transform the area into people-friendly place.”
