Both my grandmothers loved Frank Sinatra. When my paternal grandmother invited my maternal grandmother in September of 1979 to see a private intimate concert of Frank Sinatra performing in Egypt, she jumped at the opportunity.
She told me the story many times. She said that Frank Sinatra had a small stage and behind him were the pyramids. The moon and stars were so bright that the stage used only their natural light (no external lighting was brought in). According to Barbara Sinatra, it was Frank’s best performance.
When he finished, he left the stage and walked down the aisle with Barbara and my grandparents. As people reached out to touch them he said (in the most sinister voice my grandmother had ever heard), “Get out of our way or I’ll blown your kneecaps off.”
Although it was a disappointing way to end the show (my grandmother was shocked that such a beautiful voice could instantly sound so evil) the memory of Frank’s singing with the pyramids lit by the natural light of the moon and stars was a highlight for her. It is the reason I chose, “Summer Wind” as the song to dance with my mother to.
Now we both have our own memory of Frank Sinatra which was one the highlights of my life!
