Off 2 hours notice I went to
@layerhythm Triple Thread at
@publicrecordsnyc I had no idea what to expect beyond the text my man Homeboy Sandman sent that said:
“this is the spot tonight.”
As someone who spent nearly a decade throwing shows, this was incredible.
The organization of the event and concept of bringing producers, dancers, and MCs together, along with a dance party during the intermissions via the phenomenal DJ
@ohrogue was so well thought out and executed.
The host
@maroonwaters somehow managed to host all this and make it make sense. Being a host is hard, especially when you’re also a performer.
He killed it.
I’ve been to many competitive events that skip over the aspect of community, this was not one of those. The judges
@buddhastretch @opmiller1 and Homeboy Sandman actually cared. Participants stayed even if they didnt make it to the next round.
They cheered each other onward.
Even I was compelled to step in when the chance to volunteer turned into me being “embodied” by a team of artists:
@archdukeredcat @dammbutta &
@thats.ryry
What they created literally on the spot after one conversation with me about my story and values was special and a moment I hope to recapture in some sort of collaboration, sooner than later.
HipHop is a living, breathing thing. I believe that’s one of the reasons why we each fall in love with it in our own unique way. One of the true signs of being in the presence of it is walking away inspired and being just as excited as you were to be there as you are to tell the story. I’m thankful to say I’ve had many of those nights and experiences in my life.
This was definitely one of them.
