Read our latest interview with artist Laust Højgaard on
Danish artist Laust Højgaard explores the tension between strength, vulnerability, and identity through paintings and sculptures populated by symbolic characters and surreal situations. Drawing inspiration from classical mythology, architecture, and contemporary pop culture, his work investigates how individuals navigate societal structures while negotiating their own instincts and inner conflicts.
Based on the small island of Thurø near Svendborg in southern Denmark, Højgaard works across painting and sculpture, often combining expressive figuration with raw, intuitive processes. His work frequently reflects on humanity’s relationship with nature, control, and the systems that shape modern life.

SHUG SPEAKS — EPISODE 11 with @laust.hoejgaard
For Episode 11 we dive into the world of Laust Højgaard, where tension, fragility and absurdity sit side by side.
From anatomical fascinations sparked by visits to the zoo, to diving straight into canvas without a safety net, Laust’s process is instinctive and alive. No sketchbook warm-ups, just straight in.
If his work had a soundtrack? My Body Is A Cage, which honestly makes perfect sense.
What stood out was his reflection on the messy middle, when something intuitive has to be sharpened without losing its energy. For him, getting through that tension is the greatest triumph.
Big thanks to Laust for putting his trust in us.
Enjoy :)
