Final STREB show of the 2026 home season at SLAM today, brilliant end to a stupendous, sold-out run. Action Mavericks unite! @streb_extreme_action@manacheetah@streb1 photos by JoWyp.
This weekend offers a clarifying convergence. The Lucas Plan turns 50. The British General Strike of 1926 turns 100. And yesterday — May Day, 2025 — I watched Zohran Mamdani address the May Day crowd. The first sitting mayor of New York to do so since Fiorello LaGuardia. I wrote about history this week, and why I keep going back to it: Free. link in bio.
Just now, in Washington Square Park. Our mayor, chanting “Union strong” in front of signage reading: No War. No ICE. No Billionaires. I never thought I’d see the day. (Embarrassingly my phone was out of juice. Lucky for us, there’s NYC-DSA) @nycdsa@nycmayor #mayday
Out of the Hinckley shooting came the Brady Bill and Brady Handgun Act - the landmark federal gun-control measures that created the background-check system for handgun purchases. What will come out of this shooting, at the same hotel, last night?
James Brady was press secretary to President Ronald Reagan when both he and the president were shot outside the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981, during an assassination attempt on Reagan by John Hinckley Jr.. Brady was shot in the head and suffered a serious wound that left him partially paralyzed for life. He and his wife Sarah then became activists. Among other things, the Act bans gun purchases by people convicted of violent crimes - like the January 6th felons. Unless their convictions are pardoned or vacated, as theirs have been. #dcshooting
Earth Day at BAM brought us V’s latest piece “Dear Everything”, with Jane Fonda as narrator. At turns heartbreaking, bracing, bold and beautifully soft, the performers invite us to see ourselves as something radical: human, humane, and part of the natural world. Bring the show to a community near you. It’ll spark a conversation - and maybe, even, action.

“What keeps people going when the fire is hot; when the smoke is visible from satellite, when the sirens are real, when the body count climbs daily, the diplomacy appears fake, the UN Secretary General is warning of a wider war, and everywhere trust stands at zero.” Anyone else out there seeking fuel and memory care?
