I created an illustration for a book review published in @nytimes earlier this year đ· @nytbooks
It is a black comedy that deals in themes of age-gap relationship, class, consumer culture, and dissaffected girlhood. A genre reminiscent of âLolitaâ (or rather the misinterpretation that have been made of it) but from the female characterâs perspective, so it goes into uncomfortable territory. My goal was to create an illustration that doesnât perpetuate harmful iconography, and to avoid romanticizing and glamorizing while letting the toxic aspect of the relationship explored in the novel subtly linger.
I also relied on this sentence from the review, which I found both eloquent and accurate: âThe dead-end of longing whereby you ask people or things for the love they canât give you, and how lonely this mismatch can feel.â
đ The last two sketches are ideas that werenât kept.
